TRUMPF Introduces New Power Tool to Clean Laser Slats

FARMINGTON, Conn., April 10, 2006 - TRUMPF has introduced a new portable power tool, the TSC 1, which quickly and easily removes slag from the slats of laser cutting machines.

When metal is processed on flat sheet laser cutting machines, slag can develop on the support slats of the pallets. If the slag builds up on the pallets, it impairs the quality of the pieces produced. Support slats are usually replaced, often at great expense, even though they could be cleaned as many as five times before needing to be replaced. Until now, there wasn't a cleaning tool. Machine operators had to perform this difficult and time-intensive work manually by pounding the hammer or using home-made tools.

In response, TRUMPF developed the TSC 1 slat cleaner, which enables users to clean their pallets without investing as much time or expense. This tool takes just about 20 minutes to clean a standard sized pallet approximately 5-by-10 feet in size. The slat cleaner pays for itself quickly since the tool costs about 75 percent less than replacement of one pallet. Also, when compared with manual cleaning, companies can save about two-thirds of the cost per cleaning procedure, on average.

When it comes to ergonomics and handling, the TSC 1 meets the highest requirements. The tool is very quiet and easy to handle. The device's specially formed grips make it easy to guide and to turn around.

Users only have to apply the TRUMPF TSC 1 to a slat row. The tool is self-propelled and moves across the entire strip width with light hand guidance, removing all of the slag that has accumulated on the row. The user then turns the tool around and applies it to the next row. This continues for as long as it takes for the entire pallet of the flatbed machine to be cleaned.

Two spring-loaded roller pairs, powered by a 1,200-watt motor, enable the automatic carriage to move. The roller pairs flexibly adapt to slag up to one inch in thickness and shatter it during the forward movement. Even the worst build-up on slats is not a problem. The substantial pressure force of the rollers has an additional advantage: slightly bent edges are automatically straightened out.

The TSC 1 slat cleaner can be used on the flatbed laser machines with pallet changers of any manufacturer. Cleaning can be done on one pallet while the machine is running, using the other, and the slats don't have to be removed.
