IRC Power Resistors Achieve 600W Rating for Use in Power Supplies, Motor Drives

Austin, TX (February 26, 2008) -Providing design engineers with an extended range of
high-power resistive devices in industry standard TO-126, TO-220, TO-227, and TO-247
transistor outline packages, TT electronics IRC's family of power resistors is designed to suit a variety of applications requiring high stability and low inductance. Designated the MHP Series, the resistors feature power ratings from 10 watts to 600 watts. The small size, high power dissipation, high stability and low inductance values make the resistors ideal for compact power supplies and motor drives.

According to Gary Bleasdell, thick film business unit director for IRC, the resistors are being specified for applications that require large power dissipation where traditional wirewound resistors are either too large or present more inductance to the circuit than can be tolerated. "The low inductance and capacitance provided by the MHP Series power resistors make them usable up to several hundred megahertz in 50-, 75- and 100-ohm resistance values," said Bleasdell.

"The construction of the resistors includes a high quality ceramic substrate, allowing for a high dielectric withstanding voltage and extremely low thermal resistance, minimizing temperature rise and maximizing the long term stability of the resistors."
Additional applications for the MHP Series resistors include automation test equipment,
high frequency snubber and pulse handling circuits, motor control and drive circuits, switch mode power supplies, load resistors, automotive electronics, industrial power equipment, UPS systems and industrial computers.

The MHP Series resistors feature a resistance range of 0.01W to 51KW, inductance value
of <50nH and a voltage rating of 700V, along with a dielectric withstanding voltage of 2000V. Absolute tolerances are to ±1% and ±5, with absolute TCRs to ±50ppm/°C. Operating temperature range is -55C to +155°C. IRC will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements. The MHP Series power resistors are available with RoHScompliant terminations.

Lead time for the MHP Series power resistors is from stock to 9 weeks. Please contact
the factory for pricing information.
