New Power Connectors From Tyco Electronics Handle Up To 50 Amps
HARRISBURG, Pa., February 19 -- Tyco Electronics recently unveiled a new line of power connectors. The first offering in the new line of 600-volt (AC or DC) AMP power connectors is a 2-pole 50-amp version. AMP power connectors employ a genderless mating design which allows a mated pair to be assembled with two identical mating halves. This helps manufacturers reduce inventory expenses since only one style of connector housings and contacts is necessary. Once mated, the connectors provide excellent vibration resistance. These rugged connectors are rated for up to 10,000 mating cycles and can be used in demanding applications such as, electric vehicles, material handling equipment, industrial trucks & forklifts and power supplies.
The connectors employ an impact resistant, UL 94V-0 polycarbonate housing which is keyed and color-coded to prevent mismating. The connector housings are color keyed so that intermating is not possible between different colors. The housing color also designates the recommended application voltage per industry standard.
Contacts are silver plated copper offering low resistance and superior conductivity. Designers can select from a loose-piece cold-headed contact, available in three contact sizes. The cold-headed contacts feature a self-cleaning design which minimizes arcing by scraping corrosion from mating surfaces after each mating cycle. AMP power connectors accept 6 to 12 AWG wire. Stamped and formed contacts are available in reel form and in loose piece. Automated termination machines can be used to apply the stamped contact to wire.
Pricing for the housings, cold-headed contacts and stamped & formed contacts based on 5,000 pieces is: $.93/each, $.36/each and $.25/each respectively.
