Power Cable features low-smoke jacket.

Press Release Summary:

SOLONON(TM) cables feature non-halogen jackets that protect cable core and are resistant to burning. Product minimizes personal risk and indirect fire damage from smoke and halogen gases. Minimal mechanical water absorption results in optimal moisture barrier for use in direct burial or underground duct applications.

Southwire's Solonon(TM) Power Cable Jackets: Easier Pulling, Improved Mechanical, Chemical and Flame Performance

New jacket compound is alternative to CSPE and CPE

Carrollton, Ga. - Jan. 31, 2005 - For those who buy or specify industrial power cable, Southwire Company's SOLONON(TM) Power Cable provides easier pulling, and improved mechanical, chemical and flame performance. Cable protected by non-halogen, low-smoke SOLONON jacket compounds offer a new level of safety and reliability compared to chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) or chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) jackets.

SOLONON compounds easily pass UL's tough Limited Smoke test to win an LS rating, while CSPE and CPE fail, eliminating corrosive black smoke. SOLONON compounds also have superior flame retardant capability, providing longer lasting protection for the cable core. In both smoke and flame, SOLONON provides a greater resistance to burning, minimizing risk to occupants and indirect fire damage from smoke and halogen gases - such as transformer or switch gear fires.

SOLONON jackets provide higher reliability in conduit installations because of their lower coefficient of friction than CSPE, reducing pulling tension and the risk of cable damage. The compounds also exhibit much lower mechanical water absorption than CSPE, resulting in a better moisture barrier for the cable core and longer cable life in direct burial or underground duct applications.
