Micrel Launches New Post Amplifiers for the Growing PON Market

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 22 -- Micrel Inc. (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high-bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today added to its family of limiting Post Amplifiers by introducing the SY88903ALKG, SY88149CL, SY88313BLNG and the SY88343BL, a series of 1.25 to 3.2 Gbps post amplifiers featuring 3.3V power supply, higher gain and higher sensitivity for either signal or loss of signal indicators. These ICs are the latest solutions to be rolled out as part of Micrel's next-generation family of Post Amplifiers. These solutions were first launched in early 2005 and are designed to work for Fast Ethernet, OC3 to OC48, and parallel 10GE data rates. The new chips are offered in small form factor packages and ideally suited for optical modules for datacom, telecom, and passive Optical Network (PON) systems. The ICs are all currently available in volume with pricing starting at $1.95 for 10K quantities.

"The Fiber to the Home market continues to experience healthy growth," said Thomas S. Wong, vice president high bandwidth products for Micrel. "Micrel's newest Post Amplifiers are optimized for detecting wide variations in input levels and for sensing the low input signal levels typically encountered in optical network and PON applications."

The SY88149CL, SY88315BL and the SY88343BL all feature high sensitivity SD or LOS path, the ability to either detect signal or to detect loss of signal -- a crucial feature for reducing system cost by allowing the use of lower gain TIAs. The ICs are offered in the well regarded MSOP packaging with backward-compatibility to Micrel's existing family of Post Amplifiers, with most also available in the tiny 10-pin MLF(TM) packaging.
