Position Sensors suit automotive applications.

Press Release Summary:

Series CSPR sensors provide accurate position sensing while electronics are located remotely. Plastic IP65 model and all-metal IP67 model both have metal sensor tubes and are shielded to prevent signal interruption. They measure up to 250 mm with standard stroke lengths from 72.3-250.1 mm. Temperature range is 0-85°C for IP65 model and -40 to +85°C for IP67 model. Each has analog and PWM outputs and custom-length electrical pigtails.

MTS Introduces CSPR Sensor for Automotive Applications

CARY, N.C. (March 3, 2003) - MTS Sensors Division introduced the CSPR remote electronics sensors at the SAE 2003 World Congress in Detroit, MI, March 3, 2003. The robust, small sized sensors are designed to provide accurate position sensing with a small footprint, while electronics are located remotely. The sensors are available in two versions: an IP65 plastic model and an IP67 all-metal model for use in automotive applications. Both versions provide metal sensor tubes for robustness and are shielded to prevent signal interruption.

"MTS has a long history of providing highly accurate and repeatable magnetostrictive position sensors," said Commercial Products Manager, Jesse Russell. "We've now found a way to manufacture these sensors in volume to not only reduce the cost of automotive control, but improve it."

Both CSPR models provide custom length electrical "pigtails" instead of connectors so that the engineer may wire the sensor directly to the controller. The sensor is manufactured with metal tab plates for easy installation. Sensors may measure up to 250mm with no loss in performance. Standard stroke lengths are 72.3, 104.3, 109.5, 128.3, 148.0, 162.3, 186.3, 192.3, 194.3, 217.3 and 250.1mm. Temperature range for the IP65 model is 0ºC to +85ºC and -40ºC to +85ºC for the IP67 model.

Each sensor has analog and PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) outputs. The remote package design offers a smaller overall sensor size with the electronics housed within the cable up to a meter away or, optionally, included within the customer's controller board to reduce cost further.

In addition to automotive applications, Temposonics' traditional performance coupled with this low cost solution allows the high volume product engineer a new position feedback solution suitable for leading edge position control projects such as in medical mobility, diagnostic care or treatment devices; marine steering and trim; agricultural and construction equipment articulation control; appliance control; over-the-road mobile equipment applications; automotive suspension, steering and transmission systems and others.

Using the same technology found in 20 years of proven MTS Temposonics industrial position sensors, the Temposonics Commercial Sensor line offers no wear, non-contact reliability and absolute position convenience in a form that will fit most space-constrained, cost sensitive applications. The active diameter of the sensor is under 4.8 mm (0.19 inches). Temposonics Commercial Sensors eliminate the performance degradation common with contact devices under regular shock, vibration and high-cycle wear. Temposonics Commercial Sensors also eliminate the drift common in inductive devices while featuring one-time, set-and-forget calibration.
