MTS Sensors Provides Cost Competitive IP65 Sensor for Commercial Applications
CARY, N.C. (May 13, 2003) - MTS Sensors Division, announces low-cost Temposonics® magenetostrictive position sensors for high-volume commercial applications. The CSPR module is IP65 rated and ideal for rugged applications. The SE (sensing element) module is the basis for all custom sensing applications and may be purchased separately for under $10 in volume. The sensors are designed to compete with less precise contacting potentiometer technology.
"For a long time magnetostrictive sensors were not an option for designers because of cost," said Commercial Products Manager, Jesse Russell. "Now because of MTS' high-volume manufacturing techniques, magnetostrictive sensors are a viable option. Can you imagine a magnetostrictive sensor for under $50, under $30, under $10? Now it is possible."
The robust, small sized sensors are designed to provide non-contacting, accurate position sensing with a small footprint and remote electronics. The IP65 plastic CSPR model SE is housed in a metal sensor tube for robustness and is shielded to prevent signal interruption. Each sensor provides custom length electrical "pigtails" so a connector of the engineer's choice can be added, or the sensor can be wired directly to the controller. The sensor is manufactured with standard metal tab plates for easy installation, but can also be custom designed. Sensor length may measure up to 250mm. Standard stroke lengths are 72.3, 104.3, 109.5, 128.3, 148.0, 162.3, 186.3, 192.3, 194.3, 217.3 and 250.1mm. Temperature range for the IP65 model is -30ºC to +85ºC.
Each sensor has analog and PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) outputs. The remote package design houses the electronics up to a meter away from the sensing element thereby reducing the overall sensor size and footprint.
Temposonics' traditional performance coupled with this low cost solution allows the high volume product design engineer an alternative solution suitable for leading edge position control projects such as in medical mobility, diagnostic care or treatment devices; marine steering and trim; agricultural and construction equipment articulation control; appliance control; over-the-road mobile equipment applications; automotive suspension, steering and transmission systems and others.
