UDT Instruments Introduces Portable Optometer at Photonics West 2006, booth 1045

Ultra-sensitive handheld instrument features sophisticated microprocessor control
and multiple data presentation options

San Jose, Calif., January 24, 2006 - UDT Instruments, a leading manufacturer of electro-optical instruments, has announced the Model S471, a next-generation handheld optometer designed for laboratory or field environments. Key to the Model S471 is ultra-high sensitivity, sophisticated microprocessor control and three data-presentation options: direct display measurement with analog bar, RS-232 computer interface or programmable analog voltage output. Compatible with the full range of UDT Instrument sensor heads, the Model S471 is easily configured as a high-performance radiometer, photometer or fiber-optics tester.

The Model S471's sensitivity enables measurements in the 10-pA range with less than 1% uncertainty. This makes the instrument ideally suited for challenging low-light measurement applications. The Model S471 also provides wide dynamic range and computerized high-speed update rates (twice per second, or up to 53 times per second when computer controlled with the display disabled). The handheld allows for programmable averaging readings in low-pass or boxcar average. It also stores nine continuous calibrations or 50 single-point calibrations. All calibrations are traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Operating conveniences include a large, monochrome, backlit LCD for easy readout; simple, intuitive operation; a "calibration information center" that stores a wealth of calibration information for instant recall on the LCD; long battery operational life (or direct external power); a simple touch keypad; and an optional USB-to-serial bridge converter. The unit is housed in a ruggedized housing built to withstand the rigors of day-to-day field use.

The S471 is available with a lead time of 4 weeks at a price of $1,499.
