APEC 2005 Programmable Point of Load Converters Support High Current DDR2 Memory Applications

High-efficiency converters boast strong specification to help
simplify design-in

March 7, 2005, Austin, Texas - The power electronics division of C&D Technologies (NYSE: CHP), has announced a new non-isolated point of load (POL) converter that is designed to power DDR2 memory up to 75A in computing applications. The module is also suitable for use in many other pieces of equipment that require high current fixed outputs.

From a 12VDC input the VCN75-018V provides a programmable output of 1.7 to 1.95VDC with a full-load efficiency of 85%. Maximum input current is, 16.0A (at 1.95Vout@75A/10.8Vin).

The UL 94V-0 rated module has a number of features that make it easier to incorporate in a product design. These include a soft-start circuit and built in overvoltage and overcurrent protection. The VCN75-018V has a low no-load input current of 300mA and minimal output voltage ripple and noise of 50mV p-p (at 20MHz).

Further key features include remote sense, output enable and a power good signal. Turn on time is 10ms and output line regulation and load regulation are both specified as ±0.5%. Operating temperature range for the module is 0±C to +50±C and mean time before failure (MTBF) is quoted at 785,000 hours.

The VCN75-018V is supplied in a vertical-mount 22-pin SIP with a footprint of 3.00 inches (76.2mm) x 1.05 inches (26.6mm) and an overall height of 1U -1.10 inches (27.9mm).

Unit pricing for the C&D Technologies VCN75-018V is $19.50 in OEM quantities.

C&D Technologies, Inc. is a technology company that produces and markets systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power, including telecom/industrial batteries, rectifiers and electronics. This specialized focus has established the company as a leading and valued supplier of products in two major categories - reserve power systems and electronic power supplies. Corporate headquarters are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA and the company is traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'CHF.

The Power Electronics Division of C&D Technologies, Inc. has its headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, USA, with manufacturing in the USA, Mexico, UK and China plus sales locations in the USA, UK, France, Germany, China and Japan. The division designs, manufactures and distributes DC/DC converters, AC/DC power supplies and magnetics, and offers these products in custom, standard and modified-standard variations. These products, which are built to exacting requirements in ISO9000:2000-approved facilities, are typically used worldwide by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) within telecommunications, computing, industrial and other high-tech applications.

In 2004 the product portfolio as well as the global design and manufacturing capabilities of the Power Electronics Division were significantly enhanced as a result of three acquisitions, hi May 2004, C&D acquired UK-based Celab Limited, a designer and manufacturer of power conversion products for military, cable television and high-end telecommunications applications. In June 2004, the company acquired Datel, Inc., a US-based producer of medium-power DC/DC converters, data acquisition products and digital panel meters. In September, C&D completed the acquisition of CPS, the former Power Systems Division of Celestica, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies.
