Force Computers Introduces the First PowerPC® 750GX Based Processor PMC Module Available in Embedded Computing

o PowerPMC-275 PrPMC offers choice of one or two PowerPC750GX processors - at up to 1GHz clock speed and 1MByte L2 internal Cache

o Module implements advanced Marvell Discovery II(TM) system controller that supports multiple Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, integrated high-performance DDR-SDRAM memory controller and PCI 64-bit/66MHz control plane bus

o Features loosely coupled multi-processing support in dual processor mode with single operating system instance

FREMONT, Calif. (Feb.17, 2004) - Force Computers, a Solectron company and a leader in embedded computing, today introduced the PowerPMC-275 -the embedded computing industry's first PowerPC(TM) 750GX microprocessor-based processor PCI mezzanine card (PrPMC) module.

Using a PowerPC 750GX processor from IBM, the module offers one or two high-performance 1.0GHz processors and a robust 1MByte of four-way-set associative L2 internal Cache. Functioning at the processor's core frequency while still providing a very low power envelope, the PowerPMC-275 is ideal for applications that have a footprint optimized for a large L2 Cache. Also, those applications can now achieve significant performance improvements and more deterministic behavior with the PowerPMC-275 than what is offered on other PrPMCs implementing PowerPC technology.

By upgrading to the PowerPC750GX processor and doubling the amount of on-chip, integrated L2 Cache, the PowerPMC-275 can address a broader range of highly demanding telecommunications, networking, storage and industrial control applications. And with a large L2 Cache, it is perfect for semiconductor testing, medical imaging, industrial printing, next-generation wireless base stations, high-end router control-plane processors and network-attached or iSCSI storage controllers.

"With the PowerPMC-275, Force has expanded the industry's most complete PrPMC roadmap currently available," said Dave Berry, Force product marketing manager. "Overall, PowerPMC-275 delivers more than enough scalable, deterministic performance and memory for current and future applications."

Highly integrated embedded computing platform in monarch or nonmonarch mode

Capable of operating in either monarch or nonmonarch mode, the PowerPMC-275 implements single or dual IBM PowerPC 750GX processors at 1GHz with the highly integrated MarvellDiscovery II MV64360 system controller onto an open-system PrPMC form-factor for a high-performance, compact embedded platform. Multiple PowerPMC-275 configurations can be created depending on performance, memory, networking, flash and multiprocessing requirements.

In addition to up to 1GByte DDR-SDRAM and dual/independent GigE interfaces, the PowerPMC-275 leverages features like:

· 1MByte Boot flash memory

· 64MBytes User Flash memory

· 64-bit/66MHz PCI control plane

· Dual serial interfaces

· Multiple I2C EEPROM for board information and module configuration

· Integrated 2Mbit SRAM useful in optimizing networking performance

· MontaVista(TM) Linux operating system support

· Single image VxWorks(TM) BSP with loosely coupled multi-processing support

Also, this compact footprint processor module provides a scalable, cost-effective, and low-power control- or data-plane processing solution based on widely adopted PowerPC and PrPMC technologies for deployment on proprietary, CompactPCI(TM), PICMG® 2.16 or AdvancedTCA(TM) form-factor-based carrier boards.

"With GHz-level performance, superb power dissipation and 1MByte of integrated L2 cache, our750GX processor enables Force to extend its PowerPMC family of PowerPC modules to offer continuous support for state-of-the-art embedded solutions," said MarkIreland, manager of PowerPC business line, IBM Technology Group.

Standard configurations for all requirements or customizable to OEM specs

For OEMs that need more network bandwidth, the module has capacity for a third GigE interface that can be implemented on a customized variant from Force's Tailor Made Solutions program. Cost optimized OEM options are also possible using other members of the Marvell Discovery II family of system controllers such as the MV64362.

Range of technology building blocks for cost-effective, time-to-market products

In collaboration with other high-tech leaders, Force works to supply a range of technology building blocks- from VME modules and processor PCI mezzanine cards (PrPMCs) to AdvancedTCAand CompactPCI platforms. As the overall embedded computing leader (source: Venture Development Corp., May2003), Force is committed to manufacturing boards as soon as possible so OEMs can develop products with their required application features - reducing time from concept to full functionality.

Availability and pricing

PowerPMC-275 PrPMCs are currently available through Force's Early Access Unit (EAU) program with general availability scheduled for March. Single-unit pricing starts at $1,525. All monetary amounts are stated in U.S. dollars. Cost optimized lower power-dissipation 750FX and Symmetric Multiprocessing G4 members of the product family - PowerPMC-270and PowerPMC-280 - are also available.
