Piedmont Hospital Improves Quality of Care with 100-Percent Physician Adoption of Eclipsys Sunrise Clinical Manager(TM)

Hospital Achieves Impressive Outcomes by Transforming its Care Delivery Processes Through Use of Eclipsys Advanced Clinical Solution -

BOCA RATON, Fla., Nov. 30 // -- Eclipsys Corporation(R) (NASDAQ:ECLP), The Outcomes Company(R), today announced that Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, GA, a 2006 AMDIS Award Winner for excellence in applied healthcare informatics, has achieved 100-percent physician adoption of the Eclipsys Sunrise Clinical Manager advanced information solution. As a result of this widespread adoption, Piedmont Hospital has been able to transform its care delivery process and document a number of positive outcomes leading to improved quality of care.

"We are proud to be recognized by AMDIS, the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems, for our work with Eclipsys," stated William McClatchey, MD, Piedmont Hospital's chief medical informatics officer. "It signals that we are a leader in utilizing information technology to improve the overall quality and effectiveness of care."

"All of our technology initiatives are implemented with one goal in mind- improving patient safety," McClatchey noted. "Sunrise Clinical Manager is a key component of our internal programs supporting the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 100,000 Lives Campaign. As a result of these programs, Piedmont Hospital has observed a six percent reduction in unadjusted mortality over a three-year period and a reduction in medication errors from 5.5 per 10,000 doses dispensed to 0.9 per 10,000 doses dispensed. What we've been able to accomplish thus far is only the beginning, as we continue to leverage the data made available to us by Sunrise Clinical Manager to constantly improve our processes and workflows."

Piedmont Hospital's physicians were engaged early on in the implementation process, with physician user groups established to help develop and implement Piedmont Hospital-specific system order sets, custom functionality and embedded clinical content. Sunrise Clinical Manager's easy configurability enabled development of order sets designed around how Piedmont Hospital physicians actually practice medicine, so the system was intuitive for them to use. Involving physicians in all phases of implementing a computerized physician order entry (CPOE)-based system has been shown to be essential in achieving high rates of adoption, maximizing gains in communication between caregivers, and enhancing patient safety and satisfaction.

Piedmont Hospital's 100-percent adoption rate for CPOE has resulted in improved efficiencies and workflows to achieve the following positive outcomes:

o 15 percent reduction in average length of stay for patients with hip
fractures when physicians utilize evidence-based clinical pathways in
Sunrise Clinical Manager;
o 81 percent increase in smoking cessation counseling (exceeds national
average) and 63-percent increase in use of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
prophylaxis for patients presenting with stroke or congestive heart
failure;
o 42 percent reduction in overall time to administer antibiotics for
patients with community-acquired pneumonia; and
o 50 percent reduction in time to treatment for patients with critically
low potassium when using a clinical alert for patients with low
potassium.

"Piedmont Hospital has proven once again that a clinical information system such as Sunrise Clinical Manager is only of true value if physicians and other caregivers actually use it," said R. Andrew Eckert, Eclipsys president and chief executive officer. "And we're proud to note that, according to healthcare industry studies, Eclipsys solutions are used by more physicians for CPOE than any other vendor's. Piedmont Hospital's achievements are most noteworthy, because of the historic industry challenges of convincing a community-based, rather than an employed, medical staff to use a clinical information system for CPOE. Piedmont Hospital is a great example of what can be achieved when a collaborative approach is taken not only with the technology vendor but with all key constituents to ensure widespread system adoption and, thus, the best-possible outcomes."
