APCON RELEASES PHYSICAL LAYER SWITCH FOR ETHERNET AND FAST ETHERNET COPPER NETWORKS

Technology improves security and significantly lowers costs by fully automating physical layer switching

PORTLAND, OR - November 13, 2001 - APCON, Inc., a leading provider of network solutions and intelligent physical layer switching technologies, has announced the release of a protocol independent Physical Layer Switch that provides flexible point-to-point (one-to-one and broadcast mode) connectivity for 10/100 MB/Sec Ethernet and Fast Ethernet copper networks. The APCON 10/100 Copper Physical Layer Switch improves security and reduces costs by fully automating cable switching through Control Software and by providing real-time information on network connections. An out-of-the-box solution, this advanced switching device easily scales to support the needs of growing
and changing networks.

The top challenge for network administrators everywhere is to improve security and reduce costs through better control and management, says Richard Rauch, APCON president and CEO. The APCON 10/100 Copper Physical Layer Switch provides administrators of copper Ethernet and Fast Ethernet environments with the power to remotely control switching functions. On a fundamental level, this means that technicians no longer have to go into the wiring closet to connect and reconnect the right cables to the right ports. On a macro level, the business
benefits are significant. The switch is ideal for high-availability fail-over, isolating portions of networks for debugging or for increased security, automating analyzer insertion or routing, and remotely connecting/disconnecting network services.

With the APCON 10/100 Copper Physical Layer Switch, administrators can remotely and automatically connect, re-distribute and monitor Ethernet and Fast Ethernet cable connections from any computer on the network. The device features 16 or 32 RJ-45 ports for connecting and easily
reconfiguring multiple devices. A standard LAN port supports remote control and monitoring. Up to 32 independent switches can be connected together via a single RS-232 serial port interface in a daisy chain configuration, enabling users to control multiple Physical Layer Switches from a single network connection.

The APCON 10/100 Copper Physical Layer Switch is easy to install and use. In addition to remote Control Software, the device features a menu-driven LCD display (32-port version only) with soft-touch MENU, ENTER and directional keys. The front panel LCD can be used to redirect and patch cables to other connections. Up to 16 frequently used cabling configurations may be stored in the non-volatile memory of the 10/100 Copper Physical Layer Switch. These user-defined preset configurations may be instantly and effortlessly recalled from thefront panel of the unit or through Control Software. APCON also offers AutoSwitch software for advanced network management and scheduling,
including unattended automated switching.
