ITT Industries, Cannon Doubles the Current Carrying Capability for RACON PCB Switches
Short travel key switches can handle up to 100mA...
NEWTON, MA (May 4, 2004) - Two new series of short travel PCB key switches from ITT Industries, Cannon, offer double the current carrying capability of standard industry devices and a similar increase in specified life. Designated as the RACON Series devices, they can handle up to 100mA, and have an operating life at full load of one million actuations. In addition, the new key switches contain no lead, cadmium or mercury, and are compatible with lead-free soldering processes.
Successfully designed into diverse applications, including medical equipment and cockpit displays, RACON 8 and RACON 12 key switches are suitable for mounting individually, in rows or arrays, and can be used under an overlay with the recommended addition of a plunger.
The RACON 8 devices measure 8.4mm square and 5mm in height. They have an operating force of 2.5N, switching travel of 0.6mm and withstand an actuating force of up to 100N. The RACON 12 switches have been designed for applications that demand a larger target area and more positive feel. They measure 12mm square, and have an operating force of 3.5N with a travel of 0.8mm.
"Although we quote life figures of one million actuations, these devices have, in fact, been tested to more than three million operations without failure," commented George Ziegler, Cannon's Product Manager - Snap-acting, Switchlocks and Industrial Switches. "In contrast, 500 000 operations is considered in the industry to be a high quality performance, and some devices on the market only offer a tenth of that figure. For their size, the RACON switches carry twice as much current as most of the models presently available, and are compatible with emerging environmental legislation."
Pricing for the RACON 8 and 12 key switches is $0.53 for the surface mount version in 10,000 pieces and $0.48 for the through-hole version. Lead times are from stock to 8 weeks.
