Arcom Releases VxWorks® 5.5 Dev Kit for XScale® Based VIPER Single Board Computer

Kansas City, USA and Cambridge, England - October, 2004 - Arcom has announced the launch of a PC/104 PXA255 XScale Development Kit and 'board support package' to support Wind River's Platform for Industrial Devices. The Development Kit includes a pre-installed, evaluation copy of the VxWorks operating system based on Platform for Industrial Devices 2.0 and a 30 day evaluation copy of Wind River's Tornado II IDE development tools. Through this bundle, a developer can immediately begin to evaluate the component technologies and use the VIPER to create a connected industrial device. Arcom's Development Kit strategy consistently enables customers to develop applications quickly using a reliable reference platform and a production ready product.

The VIPER VxWorks Development Kit includes a complete BSP to support both VxWorks 5.5 and the multimedia capabilities of Wind® ML 3.0. You can then use the Wind River Workbench development suite supplied with Platform for Industrial Devices to develop, compile and download applications directly into the 32Mbyte Flash memory of the VIPER target system.

"Wind River has worked closely with Arcom's development team to offer a very valuable tool for rapid evaluation and application development," said Andreas Pabinger, vice president, EMEA for Wind River. "By providing a bundled version of our market specific Platforms with Arcom's single board computer product, our customers can develop and run device software better, faster, at lower cost and more reliably."

Glen Middleton, managing director at Arcom also added that "performance tests by Arcom engineers have demonstrated a worst case system interrupt latency of 29 micro-seconds for a heavily loaded system - that's with continuous file copying via TrueFFS to onboard Flash memory and simultaneously handling a sustained ping flood to the Ethernet port."

This comprehensive Development Kit includes the 400MHz XScale VIPER single board computer fitted with 64Mbytes DRAM, 32Mbytes of Flash and 256Kbytes SRAM, along with the VIPER ICE (Industrial Compact Enclosure), the VIPER-UPS (uninterruptible power supply), serial and Ethernet cable set, an optional Q-VGA color display and touchscreen as well as a Quickstart manual.

The VIPER PC/104 (3.8" x 3.6") single board computer is powered by the 400MHz Intel PXA255 XScale processor and is targeted at ultra-low power, fanless systems. This board offers TFT flat panel support, 10/100baseTx Ethernet, dual USB v1.1, five serial ports, and expansion via the CompactFlash socket and industry standard PC/104 bus.
