New Generation Spraytec - Accurate, Sensitive and Truly Good Looking

Malvern has launched a new generation Spraytec system for particle size analysis of aerosols and sprays. Like its ground-breaking predecessor, the new Spraytec delivers fully automated in situ analysis of high concentration aerosols and sprays from a robust platform, but has a data acquisition rate four time faster, covers more than double the size range, is driven by Standard Operating Procedures that allow single click operation, and has a sleek new look! Particle size in sprays and aerosols is important in defining product performance in a range of applications, from the delivery of pharmaceutical formulations through to the application of coatings and agrochemicals, and the development of fuel injection systems. However, sprays can be wet, messy and are often transient, making their analysis highly challenging. Malvern's laser diffraction-based Spraytec system is an established tool for particle size analysis in sprays, delivering real-time, high-speed measurements that enable the complete characterization of both continuous and pulsed events. The new Spraytec has an increased data acquisition rate of 10 kHz, which means a 100-microsecond time resolution, allowing extremely accurate analysis of the dynamics of spray atomization and dispersion: even the rapid changes in particle size that take place in pulsed spray events such as fuel injector operation can be followed precisely. An extended size range from 0.1 to 2000 microns, using just two lens systems, enables the routine characterization of broad size distributions, with a dynamic range of more than 1000:1 covered by each lens. Malvern's patented multiple scattering analysis additionally ensures accurate measurements at high spray concentrations, where traditional laser diffraction systems would fail. Spraytec's unique optical design, efficient air purging, and the ability to use a range of optical bench sizes overcome the physical challenges of measuring dense, widely distributed sprays and allow the continuous operation necessary for meaningful measurement and analysis. The robustness and simple operation of the Spraytec are important factors in its continued success and both are evident in the new system, from the design of the optical bench through to its software implementation. Automatic alignment ensures fully optimized system set up. A built-in SOP wizard aids method definition and transferability, and gives single-click operation. Measurements can be followed in real time. For use in regulated environments, full lifecycle documentation, following GAMP guidelines, provides complete design traceability; IQ/OQ documentation is provided for validation plans; and software provides technical compliance with the requirements of 21 CFR Part 11.
