Leader in Digital Image and Data Management Brings Low Cost PACS Solution to Veterinary Care Market

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 19 -- Eklin Medical Systems, a leading provider of digital radiography (DR), PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and Practice Management software (VIA(TM)) for the veterinary care market, announced the company has recently launched a web edition of its RapidPACS(TM) solution. Based on multi-vendor open standards, the new RapidPACS Web Edition provides automated remote storage of digital medical images which can be instantly retrieved for review when needed. RapidPACS Web Edition is being showcased at the annual Western Veterinary Conference February 18 - 21, 2008.

"Digital technology is rapidly expanding throughout the field of veterinary medicine," said William J. Hornof, DVM, DAVCR, chief medical officer of Eklin. "The proliferation of DICOM images produced by a wide range of digital modalities has created the opportunity and need to quickly store or review these images in multiple locations throughout the practice. RapidPACS Web Edition offers a very economical and easy solution to this need."

RapidPACS Web Edition automatically routes a copy of a patient's digital study to EklinVault(TM) for permanent storage and instant retrieval. This applies to all open DICOM standard digital modality exams including CR, nuclear medicine, endoscopy, ultrasound, CT, MRI and others.

"The rapid growth in digital modalities has also created the need to easily integrate a patient's electronic file containing all digital images," said Hornof. "Open DICOM standards are critical in enabling this to happen. RapidPACS is based on this open standard which allows any modality work list enabled DICOM imaging modality to be integrated."

Eklin was the first to introduce DR and PACS based on open vendor standards to veterinary care. This open architecture allows the clinician to create a patient modality work list. The latter provides significant workflow advantages such as single point of patient data entry, reducing both duplicate training of personnel and multiple input errors. It also ensures that the patient name and identification always match.

"When we first introduced our DR and PACS we knew it was imperative to be able to integrate to other modalities and other storage devices in the future," said Gary R. Cantu, president and CEO of Eklin. "Using a multi-vendor open standard allows us to seamlessly enable a patient modality work list and drive workflow. Additionally, the practice is free to purchase and integrate any system or modality that is founded on these multi-vendor open standards, rather than being stuck with a single vendor."

RapidPACS Web Edition is offered on a per-case basis at five different levels depending on the practice's demand and imaging volume. There is an initial set-up fee and monthly usage fee similar to many cell phone plans. As the practice grows, they system can scale easily to the next level at anytime. Studies are stored at the EklinVault, a high-security, colocation facility located in Silicon Valley. Images can be instantly retrieved and viewed from multiple workstations throughout the practice or shared on-line with consulting veterinarians and clients.
