Overload Relays for Continuous Motor Protection

The new Sirius 3RB2 electronic overload relays from Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) are available for standard and enhanced requirements. They permit continuous motor and plant protection from 0.1 to 630 amperes. The wide setting range offered by the relays enables this whole current range to be covered by a small number of versions. Compared to bimetallic relays, the number has been reduced by up to 90 percent. As an example, only one unit for enhanced requirements is needed to cover the range from 2.4 to 25 amperes, whereas up to 11 units would be required for bimetallic relays.

The modular design of the devices for enhanced requirements comprising current detection, evaluation and expansion modules enables the number of versions to be further reduced. When a PTC sensor is connected, these units permit full motor protection and transmit, for example, warnings and current values directly to the PLC for further processing. The reduced number of electronic overload relay versions also reduces storage requirements, simplifies configuration, installation and commissioning, and increases plant availability. The relays are electronic and mechanical units with dimensions matched to the other components of the Sirius modular system, and permit customized solution concepts.
