Overview
z/OS®.e V1.7 is a specially priced offering of z/OS that provides select functions at an attractive price. It is designed to help you exploit the fast-growing world of next-generation business applications by making the deployment of new application workloads on the IBM zSeries® 800 (z800) and zSeries 890 (z890) servers competitively priced.

This offering brings new levels of affordability to enterprise and Web-based applications while capitalizing on the capabilities of zSeries technology.

z/OS.e V1.7 uses the same code base (customized with different system parameters) as z/OS V1.7. It invokes an operating environment that is comparable with z/OS in qualities of service, management, and reporting. Also, z/OS.e invokes the same z800 and z890 hardware function that you would get with full-function z/OS.

z/OS.e V1.7 provides advances in business resiliency and security with extensions to GDPS(TM) for system recovery and improvements in RACF® interoperability. You might see a reduction in your need for IPLs with dynamic service activation for z/OS UNIX® System Services.

To help customers build and extend their z/OS.e applications, z/OS.e delivers XL C/C++ with the C compiler designed to support the latest ISO C1999 standard, also known as C99, and adds support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) that is designed to be application-transparent. As of z/OS.e V1.7, the z/OS.e C/C++ compiler has been renamed to z/OS.e XL C/C++.

To help simplify systems management, IBM Health Checker for z/OS is now a base component of z/OS.e, providing an integrated tool for checking on best practices for configuration values. The management capabilities are more robust, additional checks are available, and SDSF support helps simplify the management of the checks. The dynamic capabilities of z/OS.e are also extended with the new TCP/IP Sysplex Load Balancing Advisor for better interaction with network-based load balancers and integration between Sysplex Distributor and Workload Manager. In addition, z/OS.e V1.7 is planned to provide support for simplified network management with JES2 NJE support for TCP/IP in first quarter 2006.

IBM intends to deliver a software-based file encryption solution for z/OS.e that leverages the existing z/OS.e key management capabilities provided within the Integrated Cryptographic Services Facility (ICSF) in 2005. More information will be provided at a later date.

Key prerequisites
z/OS.e V1.7 runs only on the zSeries 800 (2066), the zSeries 890 (2086), or comparable non-IBM servers. z/OS.e V1.7 must execute in z/Architecture(TM) (64-bit) mode.

Planned availability date
September 30, 2005
