Orb API Gives Developers Freedom to Create, Enhance Desktop and Web 'Gadgets' with Orb MyCasting

Orb Launches Developer Center at developer.orb.com Encouraging Users to Add Orb's Media Sharing Features to New or Existing Programs

EMERYVILLE, Calif., April 17 -- Orb Networks, whose free MyCasting service unlocks all digital content, including photos, music, TV and videos, on the home PC to be enjoyed on any Internet-enabled device, announced the release of the Orb 2.0 API. This open API allows developers and Orb users to use a set of Web services to seamlessly add Orb functionality directly in existing or new desktop and Web applications or "gadgets" using their favorite programming languages. The company created a developer center at developer.orb.com/ , the online hub for developers to get started with the API, documentation, tutorials, Orb's API forum and a variety of resources.

"Opening up our API gives developers a chance to create and discover new applications that are powered with Orb functionality -- be it a new photo frame gadget on your desktop that streams photos through Orb or the ability to customize, design something completely unique -- it's really a blue sky opportunity for developers," said Dr. Luc Julia, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Orb Networks. "Just like you can today embed a custom widget on your blog, webpage or application, with the Orb API, you now have the ability to display YOUR media or any other content from your computer."

Julia added, "Unlike other 'Media Center-type' products, Orb encourages users and developers to create mini-Orbs or even reconstitute Orb itself. We don't presume to know all the ways people could potentially MyCast their media."

The Orb 2.0 API enables developers to embed Orb functionality into new applications or processes. Some of what users can do with Orb's MyCasting service includes the ability to:
o Stream internet, cable, or network TV to any device that has a browser
o Record TV, Internet TV or internet radio
o Play any digital media on the PC (music, TV, video, photos) on a mobile
phone or TV screen (via a game console)
o Remotely access computer files while away
o Display any internet site (i.e. YouTube, MySpace, etc) on mobile phones
or TV screens

How Orb Works

Orb's MyCasting service turns the home PC into a personal broadcasting system, and lets users build and organize their own "channels" to enjoy their music, photos, video, TV, documents and other extras, using the devices they already own. The free software is downloaded onto an always-on home PC; there is no Orb player software download required or other add-ons to install on the device used. Once the Orb MyCasting application is installed, the user can use most any Internet-connected device with a streaming media player to stream their media content -- be it live or recorded TV, music, videos and photos -- anytime, anyplace.
