Oracle Delivers Pragmatic Approach to Enabling IP Multimedia Services

Allows Communications Service Providers to Deliver Next-Generation Services Prior to Full IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Deployment

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 11 -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS -- Oracle today announced a unique and pragmatic approach that will help communications service providers (CSPs) rapidly deliver next-generation IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) services to their customers now, while enabling a seamless transition to a full IMS architecture when appropriate. With this approach, CSPs can immediately deliver and derive revenue from next-generation services, efficiently modernize their business and operational IT systems, and significantly reduce risk and costs.

IMS, the convergence of fixed, mobile and Internet communications traffic on one Internet Protocol (IP) network, has long promised to allow CSPs to launch compelling new content and integrated multimedia services (e.g., messaging with voice and video) online much more quickly. However, until now, CSPs have taken a network-first approach to delivering IMS services, requiring a full IMS network architecture build-out prior to the launch of any services. This approach has proven time consuming, capital intensive and extremely risky.

Services-Led Approach Reduces Risk

Oracle's pragmatic approach to IMS leverages the Oracle Service Delivery Platform (SDP), a standards-based software environment that enables CSPs to rapidly deliver new IP multimedia and converged services incrementally on existing network infrastructures, while they build out their next-generation networks. This services-led approach enables CSPs to differentiate their service offerings and meet customer expectations today -- without relying on hard-coded monolithic architectures -- and is independent of the pace of their network modernization plans.

"Today, traditional communications service providers are competing with more nimble and innovative new entrants. They must quickly deliver rich, interactive, blended services and strengthen customer loyalty to remain competitive and drive revenue growth," said Bhaskar Gorti, senior vice president and general manager, Oracle Communications. "Oracle's pragmatic approach to IMS will help traditional CSPs take advantage of their deep customer relationships while creating new revenue streams and partner value chains that can be sustained and enhanced as they move to modern network architectures."

"We worked with Oracle to deploy Oracle Communication and Mobility Server (OCMS), a component of Oracle SDP, allowing us to mimic third-generation functionality on second-generation phones by providing blended calling and video messaging services," said Byoung-Chol Choi, vice president, Korea Telecom Freetel. "We selected Oracle's OCMS over competing products based on its superior performance and scalability. Oracle's approach will allow innovative service providers like KTF to realize the benefits of IMS today by rolling out new services incrementally."

Deploying a Next-Generation Enterprise Infrastructure

Service providers face a fierce and expanding competitive landscape that is driving new and diverse revenue models and a rapid pace of innovation. Oracle's pragmatic approach to IMS enables service providers to implement more agile, flexible and cost-effective information technology (IT) infrastructures that can easily evolve with next-generation network architectures.

Oracle's comprehensive, standards-based, applications suite for the communications industry -- including business support system (BSS), operational support system (OSS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications -- supports virtually any service, over virtually any network while delivering a high-level of workflow automation. The suite supports new communications services along the entire delivery chain -- from concept creation and real-time customer insight, to campaign management and execution, service design and fulfillment, and billing and revenue management -- enabling CSPs to bring new services to market more quickly and deliver targeted products that meet specific customer requirements, while enabling a lower total cost of ownership.

Fueling IP Multimedia Service Innovation

Oracle is working with key partners to accelerate the development and deployment of communications services on existing and next-generation networks. The Oracle Service Delivery Platform (SDP) Partner Initiative comprises a rapidly growing ecosystem of Independent Software Vendors, infrastructure vendors and System Integrators, who are leveraging Oracle SDP's open, standards-based execution environment to provide a multitude of standards-based solutions including a full range of network components, applications and services.

The Oracle SDP Partner Initiative has already gained the support of more than 30 leading service delivery partners around the world such as FeedHenry, NewStep Networks and OptiMobile AB. Partners can view details and requirements for the Oracle SDP Partner Initiative through the Oracle PartnerNetwork portal at: http://www.oracle.com/partners.
