Octasic Announces New Family of Opus-Based DSP Products

...OCT2200 Series of DSPs Provides Unprecedented Low Power and High Performance...

MONTREAL, Canada - Octasic Inc., a leading innovator of media processing and wireless solutions, today announced that it has developed the industry's most power-efficient family of DSP solutions for media gateways, high-definition (HD) video and wireless systems.

The OCT2200 series of devices uses the highly efficient Opus DSP core architecture to enable system designers to achieve both very low power consumption and the highest levels of performance in the same device. Competitive devices are forced to choose between either low power or high performance. Octasic offers both simultaneously in a completely software programmable solution. Devices based on the second generation of the Opus DSP core (Opus2) can deliver over 36 GMACs with less than 55 mW of power consumption per GMAC, under worst case process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) conditions.

The OCT2200 series brings all the advantages of asynchronous circuits to a wide range of high-performance DSP applications. Incorporating up to 24 Opus2 DSP cores with a rich set of I/O interfaces and an optional ARM core provides an ideal platform for a broad range of applications. Targeted wireless applications include base-station products with single chip femtocell and picocell solutions, and multi-chip macrocells. Targeted media applications include: wireline and wireless media gateways; IP PBXs; audio/video transcoding gateways; High-Definition (HD) video conferencing and streaming; video surveillance Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), and medical imaging.

"Our vision is to become the leading supplier of high-performance DSP devices with the lowest power footprint," said Robert Blake, Octasic's CEO. "Our patent-pending Opus technology enables us to offer customers a programmable DSP platform with both performance and ultra low power consumption in the same device. No other DSP vendor has this sustainable technology advantage."

With the OCT2200 series, Octasic is also releasing Opus Studio, an integrated graphical development environment enabling customers today to quickly begin development of unique applications. In addition to developing their own code, customers can draw on an extensive set of libraries for voice, video, RF, and generic signal processing.

The first two members of the OCT2200 family are the OCT2224M for media processing and the OCT2224W for wireless baseband applications. The performance of the OCT2224M device allows a complete encoding for two 1080p video streams simultaneously with no dedicated hardware acceleration. Built on the same technology, the OCT2224W device can implement a complete multi-standard picocell that can provide LTE, WiMAX, HSPA+, EDGE, or any other commercial wireless standard (see related releases).

"Octasic's second generation multi-core DSPs offer a single programmable platform for high performance media processing and wireless baseband applications," said Joseph Byrne, senior analyst at The Linley Group. "Based upon the Opus2 core, the OCT2200 series consumes exceptionally low power for the high level of performance it delivers."

The OCT2200 series provides developers with unique product features, including:
  • Over 30 GMACs in a single device with less than 1.8W worst case core power consumption
  • A rich set of integrated I/O interfaces including:
    - Serial Rapid IO (SRIO)
    - PCI express (PCIe)
    - Gigabit Ethernet
    - Multiple RF antenna part interfaces
    - USB
    - Smart Card
    - Serial Voice Streams (TDM)
  • A Fully integrated development environment
  • Code Libraries for Voice, Video, and RF applications
  • An optional integrated ARM application processor
