Sipex Sets New Performance Standard for Optical Storage ICs with the SP8027

(Milpitas, CA - November 22, 2004) - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ: SIPX), a leading provider of high-performance, analog integrated circuits (IC), today announced the SP8027, an automatic power control (APC) IC that raises the APC performance standard in several key areas. Engineered utilizing new core architecture, the SP8027 offers ultra fast 5ns settling times and high 150MHz bandwidth, both of which remain constant across the entire 12dB gain adjust range. In APC products currently in the market, the gain adjust setting directly affects both bandwidth and settling times of the device. As gain is increased, bandwidth decreases and settling time increases. With the SP8027, these compromises in performance have been eliminated, resulting in extremely robust performance for high-speed DVD-write systems.

"The DVD-writer market nearly doubled in size this year, with significant growth projected for 2005," said Kevin Plouse, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Sipex. "With the constant bandwidth/constant settling time of the SP8027, Sipex has once again demonstrated customer-driven innovation for this demanding market."

SP8027 Key Features (Typical)

o 3600V/W sensitivity
