Optical Fiber suits sensor and telecom applications.

Press Release Summary:

Single-mode SmartSpun features near-circular symmetry, which allows optimization of Faraday and Kerr effect-based devices and fiber-optic gyros, where slight rotation of polarization accumulates along fiber length to measurable value. Bragg gratings are polarization insensitive, despite birefringence induced during grating inscription process.

New SmartSpun Optical Fiber for Sensor and Telecom Applications

SmartSpun fiber is a single mode optical fiber with unique polarization properties. Its "near-circular" symmetry allows optimization of Faraday- and Kerr-effect-based devices (such as current and voltage fiber sensors) or fiber-optic gyros, where slight rotation of polarization accumulates along the fiber length to a measurable value. Also, telecom devices that employ these fibers acquire unique polarization properties: experiments shown SmartSpun fiber Bragg gratings to be polarization-insensitive despite the birefringence induced during grating inscription process.
