WASABI INTRODUCES NETBSD OPERATING SYSTEM FOR NEXT GENERATION INTEL(R) IOP321 I/O PROCESSOR BASED ON INTEL(R) XSCALE(TM) TECHNOLOGY
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Francisco, CA, February 26, 2002 -- Wasabi Systems, the NetBSD Company, today announced its support for the Intel IOP321 I/O processor based on the Intel(R) Xscale(TM) core. NetBSD, the world's most portable operating system, runs on nearly fifty distinct architectures, representing fifteen CPU families. In keeping with open source practices, the source code will be committed to the NetBSD source tree upon completion.
"The combination of the high performance Intel IOP321 I/O processor based on the Intel XScale technology and the portable NetBSD operating system will benefit customers with faster time to market for networked storage solutions," said Chris Croteau, director of marketing at Intel's I/O and Bridges Division.
The announcement of the new I/O processor coincides with Wasabi's announcement of NetBSD performance enhancements for processors based on the Intel XScale Microarchitecture. The enhancements include acceleration of software RAID and support for the onboard performance monitoring facilities, adding to the advantages of NetBSD in storage applications.
Wasabi also announced support for Team ASA's single board NPWR storage appliance, based on Intel's IOP31O I/O processor. Wasabi plans on supporting the full range of XScale-based processors and solutions in the next few months, including network processors and portable information appliances.
