Fujitsu Introduces Faster ScanSnap(TM) Scanner with Advanced Optical Character Recognition Capabilities

New Features Include PDF Conversion to Word/Excel With ABBYY FineReader(R) for ScanSnap, Better File Compression, Improved PDF Search and Automatic Page Size Detection

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 21 / -- Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today introduced a new enhanced model of its award-winning Fujitsu ScanSnap(TM) scanning solution -- the ScanSnap S500. The new ScanSnap S500 not only incorporates improved scanning functionality, a new design, and operating speeds 20 percent faster than the previous model, but also comes equipped with new software capabilities allowing users to create searchable portable document format (PDF) files and convert them into Microsoft(R) Office applications.

For the first time, the new Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 comes bundled with ABBYY FineReader(R) for ScanSnap, a custom-built optical character recognition (OCR) software application based on ABBYY's award-winning recognition technology. FineReader is seamlessly integrated with ScanSnap, giving one of the most powerful desktop business tools even more functionality and flexibility. Using ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap, users can convert documents into editable formats such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or save into one of three searchable PDF options, all with a push of a button.

"We worked hand in hand with Fujitsu to produce a customized FineReader solution exclusively for ScanSnap," said Joe Budelli, vice president of business development, ABBYY USA. "It's hard to make a feature-rich, easy-to- use product even more robust. That is exactly what the FineReader and ScanSnap combination is providing. Customers will relish the productivity that comes with the extended functionality of turning scanned documents into not only searchable PDFs, but into Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files."

Furthermore, the new Fujitsu ScanSnap is equipped with improved scanning efficiency, obtaining speeds 20 percent faster than earlier models. The ScanSnap S500 produces scanning speeds of up to 18 pages per minute (ppm) for single-sided documents and 36 images per minute (ipm) for double-sided documents. Additionally, new auto-document size detection allows users to automatically scan batches of mixed size documents, reducing operational requirements and improving ease of use. Simply drop any mixed sized document batches -- such as receipts, business cards and brochures -- into the 50-page automatic document feeder and let the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner's document size detection functionality do the work.

Another new feature incorporated into the Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 includes its utilization of advanced file compression technology to reduce file sizes by 20 to 50 percent. The reduced file size capability provides users with even more piece of mind knowing that their e-mailed PDFs will not slow or overwhelm e-mail servers or exceed file size limitations, while still maintaining the integrity of the original PDF.

"Fujitsu is absolutely ecstatic with the new features that have been added to the ScanSnap S500," said Victor Kan, vice president of sales and marketing, Imaging Products Group, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "The scanner is already an amazing business tool that has been adopted by not only the SMB market, but many companies operating in vertical industries as well. Fujitsu has listened to these customers talk about how we can make future models even more impressive by adding OCR capabilities and mixed batch scanability. The new Fujitsu S500 far exceeds these requests with its advanced array of functionality."

Of course, the new Fujitsu ScanSnap scanning solution maintains all of the features and capabilities of its predecessor, including its popular business card scanning features, authentic one-touch Acrobat PDF generation, a 50-page automatic document feeder, high optical resolution up to 600 dpi, high-speed duplex color scanning, automatic blank page detection and deletion, and automatic de-skew and image rotation. In addition, the scanner comes standard with ScanSnap Organizer(TM) version 3.0, CardMinder version 3.0, and ScanSnap Manager(TM) version 4.0 for enhanced organization and ease of use, as well as Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) 7.0 Standard, allowing users to easily create searchable PDF files with the touch of a button.

The standard Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 product bundle also includes a ScanSnap scanner "Carrier Sheet," a paper adapter that allows the user to digitize A3 and B4 sized documents in addition to A4, B5, A5, B6, A6 documents and business cards. The Carrier Sheet allows safe scanning of delicate documents such as photos and fragile papers.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 -- Scanning Made Simple
Since the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanning solution was introduced in 2003, thousands of small- to medium-sized offices and business professionals have embraced high-end document management capabilities, brought to them at an affordable price. The Fujitsu ScanSnap is the first and only high-speed, double-sided color scanner under $500; a price point Fujitsu made feasible by leveraging the features and functionalities found in its more expensive document scanners.

The ScanSnap scanner's "always on" convenience, connectivity, and amazingly small footprint allow it to sit comfortably on any desk. The ScanSnap reinvented the "one-button" scanning approach, which eliminates elaborate scanning applications and the need for cumbersome driver interfaces. Its appeal for business professionals is based on its ability to provide a simple, fast, easy to use method for converting information contained on paper into digital Acrobat PDF files at the touch of a button. The resulting files can then be stored in the Windows(R) Operating system on a local PC or network allowing the user to store, organize, share, protect, print, search and interact with it as they would with any other electronic file. Additional innovative Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner features include:
-- PDF "Thumbnail" viewing
-- Dual 600dpi color CCD optical array
-- Business card recognition and export capabilities (CardMinder 3.0 software bundle)
-- "Always On" Fujitsu ScanSnap Manager software
-- sRGB technology ensures color scanning fidelity
-- USB 2.0 support
-- Integrated ENERGY STAR(R) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliance
