NTS Conducts Ballistics Test on HP StorageWorks XP12000
Camden, AR - May 4, 2006 - National Technical Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTSC) (NTS), a leading provider of engineering services, announced the completion of a "bulletproof" test on the Hewlett Packard StorageWorks XP12000 Disk Array. The test was filmed by HP for use in demonstrating the ability of the storage system to sustain a normally catastrophic failure and continue delivering data services to the streaming video server. In addition, the array was returned to full redundant functionality using standard repair procedures.
"This is the first request we've ever received to shoot a storage system-and a fish tank," says David Mann, general manager, NTS, Camden Operations. "Computer hardware and software testing is typically a service conducted at our Culver City, CA laboratory, where everything from software compatibility, USB certification, and Xbox testing is conducted." NTS Camden specializes in testing weapons, explosives and products for the defense industry. "This was an unusual requirement, but one which the NTS Camden staff conducted with the same level of professionalism and expertise provided to our military customers."
NTS ballistics experts utilized a custom mount rifled barrel to fire a .308-caliber bullet through the HP StorageWorks XP12000 Disk Array while it was operating under a full production load and streaming high-quality videos to nearby monitors. The bullet was fired at a velocity of 2900 feet per second, from a distance of approximately 40 feet. To pass the "bulletproof" test, the XP had to continue streaming video during and after the bullet passes through the disk array. To prove the bullet traveled all the way through the disk array, it had to shatter a fish tank behind it. "The XP team took the standard customer video to a whole new level," says Mike Sunseri, writer and director at Media Agents, who filmed the test for HP.
Chris Powers, director, StorageWorks XP says, "Based on the XP physical and electrical architecture and the performance record of the XP systems in tough environments, I was fairly confident that the test would succeed as it did."
The video is posted on the Hewlett Packard website, as well as a documentary detailing the conception and creation of this unique customer video.
