New Cummins Power Generation Rental Power Unit Is Designed for Power Projects in Hot, Dusty Environments

November 19, 2007

When a refinery in Zambia was unable to rely on the grid for power, they turned to Cummins Power Generation and created their own power plant using C1250 DR2 Rental Power units.

Minneapolis, MN - Having electric power in remote locations far from the grid has been a challenge for companies operating in the Middle East and Africa. Furthermore, finding equipment that can operate reliably in hot and harsh environments has added to the challenge.

Operations such as gold mines and water pumping facilities in Saudi Arabia and refineries in Africa have had to rely on power generation equipment not designed to operate in hot, dusty and sandy climates. Operating costs are often higher than necessary due to the need for increased maintenance on generator sets to keep them running.

Experienced in providing power in these hot and harsh climates, Cummins Power Generation has introduced a new Rental Power unit designed to meet the challenge. The new C1250 DR2 Power Box 20 unit is a fully integrated power system (including generator set and controls) specifically designed for power projects in the Middle East and Africa. The new 1250 kW Power Box 20 unit is both 50 and 60 Hz capable and housed in a 20 foot "CSC-plated" ISO container.

"The new C1250 DR2 Power Box 20 unit is a robust power unit designed to operate in harsh climates with 50+ degree C (122+ degree F) ambient temperatures," according to Kent Lobsiger, technical director, Rental Business, Cummins Power Generation. "A new cooling system has been developed using a larger low fin density radiator to avoid plugging from dirt and debris." Hinged radiator louvers also provide necessary protection and allow for easy access to radiator cores for cleaning.

Insulated combustion air pipe-work has also been added to the new unit that will further protect combustion air from heat to seal joints against dust ingress. External roof-mounted silencers also improve engine access for routine maintenance.

"The new C1250 DR2 Power Box 20 is ideal for long-term power projects in a wide variety of on-site prime power applications such as powering remote villages, industrial plants, refineries or mining operations," says Lobsiger. "Whether paralleled with the utility or isolated from the grid, these power units are designed to be easy to use."

When a refinery in Zambia was unable to rely on the grid for power, they turned to Cummins Power Generation for help in creating their own power plant using multiple C1250 DR2 Rental Power units.
