New Cummins Power Generation 250 kW Generator Set is Certified to Meet EPA Tier 3 Emissions Regulations

MINNEAPOLIS - A new 250 kW diesel generator set from Cummins Power Generation is certified to meet EPA Nonroad Tier 3 emissions regulations, making it suitable for all nonroad and many stationary applications in the U.S. Nonroad applications include rental generator sets or temporary installations of less than one year.

"The new 250 kW DQDAA generator set with the Tier 3 option produces very low emissions of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter without the need for aftertreatment strategies which can drive up costs," says Brian Mann, Product Manager. "The generator set is designed for emergency standby and prime power applications in all areas of the U.S and in a majority of the non-attainment areas requiring Tier 3 certified generator sets after January 1, 2007." Mann notes that some local air quality standards can be stricter than national EPA standards, requiring additional controls.

The 250 kW DQDAA meets EPA's Tier 3 emissions regulations by reducing emissions of oxides of nitrogen by 37.5 percent compared to previous Tier 2 levels. The advanced engine design reduces oxides of nitrogen through a recipe of advanced in-cylinder combustion technology that uses new combustion chamber geometry and advanced electronic fuel injection. These design changes are coupled with full-authority electronic engine controls for tighter control of engine operating parameters. The overall benefits are reduced emissions without reduction in power output, without using complex and expensive mechanical systems such as variable geometry turbochargers.

As the industry leader in providing customers with cutting edge power generation solutions that meet or exceed federal standards, the 250 kW DQDAA is part of Cummins Power Generation's portfolio of EPA-certified sets. These include a full range of Tier 2 and Tier 3 generator sets that are certified to EPA and CARB standards.

A primary feature of the 250 kW DQDAA generator set is its strong motor-starting capability and fast recovery from transient load changes. The torque-matched system includes a heavy-duty Cummins 4-cycle diesel engine, an AC alternator with high motor-starting kVA capacity, and an electronic voltage regulator with three-phase sensing for precise regulation
under steady-state or transient loads. The generator set accepts 100 percent of the nameplate standby rating in one step, in compliance with NFPA 110 Level 1 requirements.

The standard PowerCommand® digital electronic control is an integrated system that combines engine and alternator controls for high reliability and optimum performance. Optional weather-protective enclosures and coolant heaters allow generators to perform in outdoors in a variety of climates. Environmental concerns are addressed by low exhaust emission engines, sound-attenuated enclosures, exhaust silencers, and dual-wall fuel tanks.
