Symbol Unveils Switched-Wireless Networking in New Architecture for Wireless LANs

Symbol introduces new WLAN architecture with the Mobius(TM) Axon Wireless System, a centralized wireless networking switch and access port system designed to support IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi), 802.11a, 802.llg and legacy 802.11 frequency hopping wireless technologies.

The Mobius Axon Wireless System from Symbol Technologies is the newest form of wireless local networking. This new system centrally delivers advanced performance wireless networking with security, Quality of Service (QoS), network management (XML-based), and utility features to support enterprise mobile computing applications. The Mobius Axon Wireless System features the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch, a wireless networking switch that can support IEEE 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g and legacy Symbol 802.11 frequency hopping wireless networks.

The Mobius Axon Wireless System will deliver wireless technologies through Plenum-rated (fire retardant approved) Mobius Axon Access Ports, which can be attached to a desktop, wall, and above or below ceiling tiles, for WLAN design flexibility and maximum performance to mobile client devices.

In the enterprise wireless LAN (WLAN) market today, network management, security, network services and other wireless networking intelligence, reside inside the WLAN access point on the edge of the network. Symbol has put all the intelligence of high performance, standard-based wireless networking into a Linux-based, scalable system (Ul rack-mountable design) that will reside at he core of the network. The Mobius Axon Wireless System will provide advanced Layer 2, Layer 3 and Layer 4 networking features at a much lower total cost of ownership (TCO) when compared to deploying and maintaining enterprise-class, intelligent 802.11b and 802.11a WLAN access points.

The Mobius Wireless Axon System provides paths for forward migration to the emerging 802.11a technology and backward compatibility to existing Symbol Spectrum24 802.11 Frequency Hopping and Spectrum24 High Rate 802.11b wireless LANs. Through software in the wireless switch, existing Symbol access points products will be able to act as Mobius Axon Access Ports. This feature not only allows customers to preserve existing network design and deployment investments, it further extends existing investments by providing today's new requirements for Class of Service (CoS), Quality of Service (QoS), and newer wireless security mechanisms.
