Network Management Software Expands Uses for Legacy Devices
Ottawa, IL - The convergence of the Internet with traditional factory floor equipment has stimulated many new uses of serial ports. To give users total control of company-wide serial applications, B&B Electronics has introduced the Q4 Smart Switch network management software.
The Q4 software, together with its companion Buffered Smart Switch 232BSS4, manage communication of four serial devices, including baud rates, handshake requirements, device names and installation notes. Each serial device is assigned a Virtual COM Port within Windows XP, 2000 or NT. Software programs will communicate to the device as if each has its own hard-wired connection. The Q4 software eliminates the need for custom programming of communication parameters.
Two units can be connected back-to-back (via a null modem cable) to create a powerful multiplexer, and multiple switches can be cascaded to expand the network to more than four ports.
With the Q4 software, a PC can monitor and control four serial devices in one of two modes. In Auto Select mode, the unit sends data automatically from the slave ports to the master port. In Smart Switch Mode, commands from the Master are used to select a single port for transmit and receive, or to broadcast the same message to multiple ports at once.
Other features include:
-Support of data rates from 1200 to 115.2K bits per second -Temperature range 0 to 70 degrees C -Compatible with Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and XP -Uses DB9 connectors for slaves and DB25 connector for master -Runs on 10 to 15VDC power and optional, off-the-shelf DC power supplies are available
