Original Press Release:
Hilscher Releases the netIC, a Highly Flexible Single Chip Module Adaptable to All Real-Time Ethernet Systems
February 2009 - Hilscher North America Inc. is pleased to announce the release of the netIC, a network interface module designed to fit into a standard 32-pin Dual-In-line [DIL] socket. Based on Hilscher's netX technology, the netIC is a series of interchangeable modules that provide network slave connectivity for: EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, EtherCAT, PowerLink, SERCOS III and CANopen. For the Ethernet protocols with integrated switch or hub functions, netIC has these features built in including two Ethernet transceivers.
The netIC exchanges data with the host controller via serial communications using the widely popular Modbus RTU protocol. On the Modbus RTU side, transmission rates of up to 115 kBits per second can be reached with the netIC. In addition it is possible to replace the Modbus RTU protocol with a custom or proprietary protocol using the gateway task in netIC. Optionally, the netIC can also communicate via the SPI- or I2C serial interfaces where the user data can be transferred with simple read-write commands. For simple applications such as I/O blocks, shift registers can be configured eliminating the need for an additional processor.
Maximum input and output data vary and depend on the network technology being used, values can range anywhere from 0 to 1490 Byte(s). Delivery of the netIC firmware can be provided as Linkable Object or in source code for modification.
To implement the netIC, a simple evaluation board [NIC-EB] is available along with test and configuration software. Separate adapters [NICEB-AIF-DP] are required for fieldbus.
The netIC gives you the full range of all major industrial fieldbus and Real-Time Ethernet networks making your device a highly flexible product.
