Axis Introduces Day and Night Network Camera for Professional Applications

CHELMSFORD, Mass. - (March 8, 2005) - Axis Communications, the global leader in the network video market, today announced the AXIS 221 Day & Night Network Camera, a high performance camera offering progressive scan, Power over Ethernet (PoE) and built-in video motion detection. The AXIS 221 provides high-quality images under all lighting conditions and is an ideal surveillance solution for indoor and outdoor environments, including education, transportation, retail, government and healthcare applications.

The AXIS 221, which is built around the ARTPEC-2 video compression chip, is a true day/night camera that provides color video when there is sufficient light and black-and-white video under dark conditions. It offers unparalleled image quality with simultaneous Motion JPEG and true MPEG-4 full frame rate video streams, which allows systems to optimize image quality and bandwidth efficiency.

"The AXIS 221 is one of our most advanced network cameras and represents a new generation of high-performance cameras from Axis," said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager of Axis Communications. "With the security industry shifting to IP-based systems for improved performance and reliability, cameras such as the AXIS 221 are certain to be the way of the future."

The AXIS 221 uses a high performance Pentax lens and a progressive scan CCD image sensor that enables moving images to be presented without distortion or blur. Its PoE functionality is built according to the IEEE 802.3af standard, which reduces installation costs and consolidates the power source to a central location. The camera also provides video motion detection for the reduction of bandwidth use and storage capacity. It is supported by the industry's largest base of application software through the Axis ADP program, as well as the Axis Camera Station video management software.

The AXIS 221 and all protective housings will be available through Axis' distribution channels in April 2005. The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the AXIS 221 Network Camera is $1,199.
