Multiprotocol Router enables inter-fabric resource sharing.

Press Release Summary:

TotalStorage® SAN16B-R (2109-A16) offers FC-FC routing, FCIP tunneling, and iSCSI gateway capabilities, which enable infrastructure simplification solutions to selectively share resources between fabrics. Multi-protocol routing services are configurable on port-by-port basis. Rack-mount, 2U router is scalable from 8-16 ports, each capable of operating as 1-2 Gbps FC or as 1 Gbps Ethernet. It also includes dual redundant, hot-pluggable power supplies and fans.

IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-R Multiprotocol Router Offers FC-FC Routing, FCIP Tunneling, and iSCSI Gateway Capability

At a glance

The IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-R (2109-A16) multiprotocol router is designed to provide:

Multi-protocol routing services configurable on a port-by-port basis

iSCSI Gateway to integrate low-cost Ethernet-connected servers into the SAN, enabling storage consolidation

Optional FC-FC Routing to enable communication between devices on different SAN fabrics, thereby providing selective, secure resource sharing across multiple SAN fabrics, while keeping the fabrics separate and isolated

Optional FCIP Tunneling to enable cost-effective fabric interconnection of local and remote sites across IP networks for business continuity solutions

Overview

The IBM TotalStorage® SAN16B-R (2109-A16) multiprotocol router is designed to provide intelligent multiprotocol routing services to help enable IP-based global mirroring business continuity solutions, iSCSI-based host server storage consolidation solutions, and SAN routing capabilities for infrastructure simplification solutions to selectively share resources between fabrics.

The SAN16B-R router is scalable from 8 to 16 ports, with each port capable of operating as 1-2 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) or as 1 Gbps Ethernet. This flexibility in configuration allows the SAN16B-R router to deploy services as needed on any active port including FC-FC Routing capability to enable increased SAN connectivity and resource sharing between fabrics, FCIP Tunneling to enable SAN extension over geographic distances, and iSCSI Gateway to enable host server storage consolidation.

The base SAN16B-R router provides a 2U rack mount chassis, dual redundant hot-pluggable power supplies and fans, zero Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics, and eight active ports with each port configurable as 1-2 Gbps Fibre Channel or as 1 Gbps Ethernet. The base function includes Fibre Channel full fabric capability, Advanced Web Tools, Advanced Zoning, Router-to-Router Exchanged Based ISL Trunking, Extended Fabric capability, and iSCSI Gateway functionality. Orders must include SFP optics on all active ports; customers may select any combination of shortwave (SW), longwave (LW), and extended distance LW SFPs.

To enable additional capability and function, customers may optionally order the upgrade from 8 to 16 active ports, with ports configurable as 1-2 Gbps Fibre Channel or as 1 Gbps Ethernet. Customers can configure up to a maximum of 12 1 Gbps Ethernet ports. Additionally, customers may order the A16 FC-FC Routing Activation feature, A16 FCIP Activation feature, or the comprehensive A16 FCIP and Fibre Channel Routing Bundle. Each active 1 Gbps Ethernet port is designed to support up to eight iSCSI gateway sessions with IP-based host initiators, or when activated, support the optional FCIP tunneling capability.
