New Cat® 287 Multi Terrain Loader Offers Performance and Versatility

Caterpillar introduces the 287 Multi Terrain Loader, a compact rubber-tracked machine, designed for use in construction, landscaping, agriculture and other applications. Equipped with a suspended undercarriage, vertical-lift loader linkage and comfortable cab, the 287 works productively in a broad range of applications and terrain conditions. With its high traction, excellent flotation and low ground pressure, the machine excels in soft underfoot, on sloped terrain and on sensitive surfaces, such as turf.

The new Multi Terrain Loader combines the upper portion of the Cat 262 Skid Steer Loader with a rubber-track undercarriage. It has an operating capacity, as defined by SAE J818 at 35 percent of tipping load, of 2,450 pounds (1111 kg). Its operating weight is 9,860 pounds (4471 kg), yet ground pressure is 3.8 psi (26 kPa).

Productive power train
A turbocharged Cat 3034T diesel engine, rated at 74 net horsepower (55 kW), provides power for the 287. This high-performance engine meets worldwide emissions requirements and offers low sound levels and reduced fuel consumption. It works in partnership with a closed-loop, high-output hydrostatic drive and exclusive anti-stall system to deliver maximum torque to the tracks for reliable, aggressive performance.

Innovative undercarriage
The 287 incorporates a unique rubber-track undercarriage that transfers weight to the ground through 42 wheeled contact points. Weight is distributed evenly, improving traction and stability, reducing ground pressure and minimizing compaction. The rugged rubber track is lightweight and pliable, yet reinforced with high-tensile strength cords for extra durability. Its edges are beveled to prevent scuffing or damage when maneuvering on sensitive surfaces such as lawns, turf or landscapes. No steel is used in the track, which eliminates corrosion.

Each track is 18 inches (457 mm) wide, and track on the ground is 72.5 inches (1842 mm). The design minimizes ground pressure, allowing the machine to work well in wet and soft underfoot conditions where a wheeled machine could not work.

An elevated positive drive system keeps drive components away from ground debris, improving service life. The sprocket is fitted with replaceable roller sleeves that mesh with rubber lugs inside the track for smoother operation. Track lugs travel on the outer edge of the roller wheels to ensure proper tracking. A heavy-duty suspension system minimizes shocks to the operator, improving load retention and ride comfort.

Comfortable cab
The 287 is designed for easy operation. A wide cab opening, three-point grab irons and skid-resistant steps allow easy entry and exit. The standard ROPS/FOPS cab includes an adjustable seat, retractable seatbelt, arm rests, hand and foot throttles, dome light, rear wall liner and overhead instrument panels. Standard pilot operated controls allow precise, low-effort movement of machine and work tools. Two additional cab options are available-a deluxe cab package and a cold weather package.

Vertical-lift linkage, versatile quick coupler
The new Multi Terrain Loader offers high lift, long reach and a near-vertical lift path. The linkage has two additional links per side which allow the loader arms to move forward during the lift cycle, providing 55 percent more reach when fully raised than a radial lift loader. When lowered, reach is the same as a radial lift loader to maintain, good ride characteristics during loaded carry. The vertical lift linkage design also offers good visibility to the work tool and protection for hydraulic cylinders and lines.

Work tools can be changed quickly and easily with the standard mechanical or optional hydraulic quick coupler system. Cat Work Tools incorporate an interface that matches the coupler, so tool changes can be completed quickly and easily. Many Cat Work Tools for Skid Steer Loaders are compatible with the 287 and other Caterpillar® Multi Terrain Loaders.

Easy service
To enhance serviceability, daily maintenance checkpoints are grouped in easy-to-reach locations. The rear engine compartment door opens 90 degrees for easy access to both sides of the in-line mounted engine. The radiator, hydraulic oil cooler and grill tilt up to improve access to the cooling system, and the cab tilts back to reveal hydraulic components and the fuel tank. The battery, air filter and engine belt are conveniently located for maintenance and service. Extended life coolant, a 500-hour engine oil change interval and SoOoSsm (Scheduled Oil Sampling) valves increase uptime.
