MTS Systems Corporation Designing Air-Frame Test System for Japan Defense Agency

Next-generation system for fatigue testing of new P-X Maritime Patrol Aircraft

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Nov. 8 /-- MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ:MTSC) today announced it is designing a $16.2 million state-of-the- art fatigue test system for Japan Defense Agency (JDA) pursuant to an order received in MTS' second fiscal quarter. The system, which comprises advanced MTS control technology, best-in-class software and innovative data acquisition hardware, will enable JDA to enhance and accelerate structural fatigue testing and certification activities for its new P-X Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

"MTS works closely with the world's leading aircraft manufacturers to develop advanced engineering solutions for the aerospace industry's most complex and demanding testing challenges," said Sidney W. Emery, Jr., MTS chairman and chief executive officer. "JDA's selection of MTS validates our technology development path and serves as a testament to our ability to provide close, local customer support to a degree unmatched on a global basis."

The selection of MTS follows previous JDA orders for both static and fatigue test systems for its US-X aircraft, and static test systems for its C-X and P-X aircraft. "The proven quality and advanced capabilities of MTS test equipment, and the strong local support enjoyed by JDA on previous projects has enabled them to meet a full range of test requirements," said Gene Woelffer, MTS aerospace application engineer. JDA will deploy its new system to perform full scale fatigue testing on a floating P-X aircraft with 6 degree-of-freedom positioning, and also conduct a variety of landing gear tests.

Choosing MTS for P-X fatigue testing allows JDA to leverage advanced MTS controllers used on earlier US-X fatigue tests. In addition to being outfitted with control channels to meet P-X fatigue testing demands, these controllers will run the latest version of MTS AeroPro(TM) software and integrate tightly with new VXI EX1629 DAC hardware. System users will be able to leverage unmatched AeroPro data visualization capabilities to gain access to a wealth of test information -- both in the test lab and remotely. The integrated EX1629 unit will yield higher data resolution, support multiple dynamic and static scan rates and provide an effective platform for employing advanced calculations. Also included in the order are MTS actuators, load cells, hydraulic service manifolds and other hydraulic service products.
