MTS Sensors Durable and Reliable over Time in Machine Tooling Applications

Magnetostrictive technology provides superior performance in harsh
environments..

CARY, N.C. (September 8, 2008) - MTS Systems Corp., Sensors Division's
Temposonics® linear-position sensors are being utilized by the machine tooling industry due to high accuracy over time even in the harshest conditions. The R- and G-Series'
electronic housings and sensing elements were developed out of MTS Sensors' experience
with the extreme conditions faced in applications such as sawmills and the mobile
hydraulics equipment market. The rugged design, combined with the many performance
benefits inherent in magnetostrictive technology, make the sensors ideal for even the
harshest applications, including machine tooling equipment which requires not just reliability
and durability, but accuracy and repeatability as well.

"In some extreme applications, accuracy is not as important as the robustness of
the sensor, but in the machine tooling industry, accuracy and reliability are important to
ensure the quality of the end-product being produced," said Matt Hankinson. "Our
R-Series and G-Series linear position sensors are designed to withstand extreme shock
and vibrations while offering the benefits of high accuracy and absolute position."
The industrial standard G-Series and R-Series products are capable of continuous
operation at external vibration levels of 15 g (10-2000 Hz, IEC standard 68-2-6) and surviving
shock levels of 100 g (single hit, IEC standard 68-2-27). Adding the high shockand
vibration-resistant option, these products can withstand 30 g vibration
without interruption of normal operation. In addition to protection from shock and
vibration, these sensors are also available with IP67 housings for protection from
particles and fluids making them well-suited for harsher machine tool applications.

The R-Series sensors are smart sensors for fast, high-precision, and synchronized
position control applications, available with SSI, DeviceNet, CANbus, Profibus,
EtherCAT and dual output analog outputs. These rugged industrial sensors provide linear,
absolute measurement and non-contact sensing technology. With non-linearity less than
0.01% and repeatability within 0.001%, these sensors are ideal for applications, such as
machine tooling, that require accuracy, reliability and consistency.

The G-Series provides rugged, accurate measurements with either analog or
digital outputs, and is designed for backwards compatibility with legacy Temposonics
products. The G-Series sensors are programmable sensors with built-in diagnostics for
applications that require analog, start/stop and PWM outputs.

MTS Sensors, a division of MTS Systems Corp., is the global leader in the development
