MTS Sensors Adds Gradient Upload Capability To Lowest Cost Magnetostrictive Sensor

Automatic calibration and upload of scaling factor simplifies maintenance and cuts costs....

CARY, N.C. - (October 4, 2005) - MTS Sensors further enhances its E-Series of Temposonics® magnetostrictive position sensors by adding a gradient upload capability to its digital pulse output model EP2. Because it allows for automatic upload of the sensor-scaling factor and therefore automatic calibration, this feature simplifies system setup and maintenance and cuts costs by eliminating the possibility of operator error. In addition, the "Start/Stop" pulse output enables users to sense as many as four distinct positions at one time along the same axis.

"With similar products, it's necessary to hand-enter the calibration of a digital pulse output product," said Temposonics Marketing Manager Dave Edeal. "With this new feature, the Model EP2 Linear-Position Sensor cannot only be automatically calibrated during installation, but there is no need to re-calibrate if you lose power. And by eliminating the possibility of human error, we greatly reduce maintenance time, effort and costs. The ability to sense multiple magnets with one sensor further reduces the effective sensor cost, making it even more attractive when considering proximity switch replacement. "

Upon its introduction, the Model EP2 Sensor became the lowest-cost magnetostrictive sensor on the market and the clear alternative to linear potentiometers and multiple limit switches, as a position sensor that provided performance and reliability in a small package that was ideal for machine control and factory automation designers. With the addition of the gradient upload feature, the EP2 Sensor should quickly be adopted by the materials handling, packaging, and assembly equipment industries.

Each EP2 Sensor is equipped with a waveguide sensing element, conditioning electronics for output position data, a protective metal application housing and an external position magnet. The entire sensor may be mounted to the machine by way of standard mounting feet and screws. The free-floating magnet is affixed to the moving machine part to provide exact position.

Sensors are available in lengths from four to 60 inches.
