American Power Conversion Unveils Next Generation Symmetra® UPS Tower and InfrastruXure(TM) Rack-Mount Models

APC Symmetra LX 4-16 kVA N+1 Redundant UPS Provides Enhanced Features in a New Space-Optimized Design that Delivers More Value in up to 50 Percent Less Space

WEST KINGSTON, R.I. - May 3,2004 - American Power Conversion (Nasdaq: APCC) (APC), a leading provider of global, end-to-end infrastructure availability solutions, today introduced an enhanced line of its award-winning Symmetra Power Array® scalable and redundant UPS (uninterruptible power supply). The new modular Symmetra LX family, which delivers high-
performance redundant power protection with scalable power and run time, offers five models ranging in size from 4kVA to 16kVA N+1 redundant. The tower and rack-mountable models provide ideal power protection for network-critical physical infrastructure in multiple applications including wiring closets and computer rooms containing critical IT and telecommunications equipment.

Symmetra LX sets a new standard for high availability power protection. The rack-mountable models are tested and certified for use within APC's InfraStruXure architecture. Its compact size frees up real estate in space constrained IT environments. The redundant, fully scalable design complements many of the features found in the latest high-performance servers, switches, and storage devices that support business critical applications including converged networks and network storage.

"APC pioneered the first redundant, scalable and modular UPS with the introduction of the Symmetra Power Array in 1997," said Dwight Sperry, APC's group general manager of Enterprise Systems and Business Networks. "Since then, businesses have become even more dependent on information technology and electronic equipment. The convergence of voice and data networks, shared storage, and other business critical IT applications continue to drive the need for highly available, scalable solutions. The new Syrnmetra LX design, as a stand-alone product or as an integrated component in the InfraStruXure power, rack and cooling architecture, continues to define new availability standards."

Space-Optimized Design, Greater Serviceability
A new space-optimized design with the capability to provide 30 minutes of runtimne at a full 16kVA in a single frame enables the Symmetra LX to reduce footprint requirements by ul) to 50
percent over the previous solution. The modular design of the Symmetra LX also minimizes the cost of ownership by making the unit as serviceable as possible. All Symmetra systems ultilize hot-swappable power, battery, and intelligence modules that contain components critical to the operation of the UPS. End users, system integrators, and resellers will benefit significantly from the Symmetra LX's enhanced ease of deployment. APC now can configure and ship the Symmetra LX
tower and rack-mount models with intelligence, power, and battery modules pre-installed. Further enhancements to the serviceability of the Symmetra LX include a new field-replaceable frame, electronics module, and an easily removable wiring tray.

Improved Adaptability
Several new features also make the Symmetra LX systems more adaptable. All systems worldwide (tower and rack-mount) provide necessary input/output wiring connections and voltage capabilities, which makes a single UPS suitable for any installation requirement. A specially designed extended run connector and communication card enables the hot-install of intelligent extended run battery frames to respond to changing runtime needs. Each model can be converted in the field to a rack-mount or tower form factor. Protected equipment is connected via output hardwiring and/or receptacles arranged on different field-replaceable power distribution panels allowing the Symmetra LX to adapt to changing applications.

Enhanced Manageability
Symmetra LX also offers improved manageability, shipping standard with APC's network management card with environmental monitoring sensor providing unparalleled remote management capability and monitoring. This card, which fits in one of the Symmetra LX's two smart-slots, includes APC's PowerChute® Network Shutdown software and uses the exceptional reliability of embedded technology to deliver a direct connection to the network with a dedicated IP address thus avoiding the need for a proxy server. The intuitive user interface is accessible via a
standard web browser, Telnet or SSH giving the user the ability to remotely reboot equipment, monitor local environmental conditions, configure and receive event notification and recommended actions. The card also includes a temperature monitor allowing the UPS to report the temperature of the room or rack via the network. The advanced APC PowerView LCD Display provides the ability to manage, configure, control, and diagnose the UPS directly. Remote emergency power off connections and contact-closure management also are standard on all Symmetra LX models.

APC's Symmetra LX Power Array is now available in North America, Europe, and Latin America. Prices in North America start at $5,975 (estimated resale price).
