Grayhill Introduces GPS Functionality On Latest "DuraMax" Base Platform

Ultra-rugged handheld can be quickly, affordably custom-configured for OEMs, ISVs, integrators - even at low quantities

LaGrange, IL (November 21, 2006) -- Grayhill, Inc. and its Embedded Group have announced their latest addition to the ultra-rugged, configurable Custom Mobile Solutions series with a "DuraMax" base platform that features GPS functionality; a built-in altimeter and compass; a portable, lightweight ergonomic design; and industrial-grade ruggedness that can withstand harsh and unpredictable environmental conditions. Grayhill base platforms can be quickly, affordably custom-configured, even at low quantities. The company's newest device is designed for OEMs, ISVs, and integrators who support today's field service, military and agricultural professionals; and wish to build and cost-effectively brand specialized rugged mobile hardware offerings.

The GPS-enabled DuraMax platform can be paired with a variety of specialized software applications to perform an extensive range of tasks in the vehicle, in the field, or on-site at a client location. Standard options include a 3.5" display that is designed to deliver improved readability over smaller PDAs and handheld devices; and specially treated to maintain brightness and clarity in harsh sunlight, glare, and inconsistent lighting. Extended 8-10 hour battery life maximizes field functionality between charges; and Secure Digital (SD) and Compact Flash (CF) slots permit increased data storage and linking to an array of specialized peripheral devices that facilitate scanning, printing and photography. The base unit is certified to meet stringent military-grade standards for drops, vibration, humidity, altitude, extreme temperatures, moisture and dust, including MIL-STD-810F and IP67. GPS and wireless functionality transmit critical information and positional data without cables; eliminating paper, simplifying dispatch and routing, reducing administrative costs, and streamlining inventory management.

Based around the familiar WindowsCE operating system and the Intel XScale processor, pre-tooled DuraMax base platforms facilitate quick, cost-effective modification including wireless technology integration, connectivity enhancement, memory expansion, specialized labeling, even changes to color and form factor. Grayhill can also integrate sensor technology directly into the unit for on-demand or semi-continuous data sampling. Each configurable Custom Mobile unit can be tested by Grayhill for compliance with stringent emissions, susceptibility and durability standards including IP67, MIL-STD 810F, FCC Part 15 Class A, European CE, FIPS 201-1 PIV, and ISO/IEC 7816.
"Our field-proven base platforms combine with our low-volume, in-house customization and testing capabilities to quickly yield a complete, qualified hardware solution," explains Rob Haller, vice president, mobile computing group. "As a result, OEMs, ISVs and integrators only pay for the features they need, instead of settling for off-the-shelf functionality that doesn't necessarily optimize their unique application requirements. Most clients find that our six decades of manufacturing expertise help us engineer these solutions much more quickly and cost-effectively than they could themselves." Haller notes that in some cases, the unit can be produced up to 50 percent faster when Grayhill manages hardware development.
