Intermec Introduces the First Rugged Handheld Computer with Integrated EX25 Near/Far Imaging Technology

With the CK31ex mobile computer, warehouse workers need only one device for all data collection applications, including scanning 1D, 2D, composite and postal codes, and image capture

EVERETT, Wash., June 27, 2007 -Intermec (NYSE: IN) introduces the CK31ex, the first handheld computer with integrated near-far area imaging technology that can read virtually any symbology from six inches to 50 feet. The CK31ex enables warehouse workers to consolidate their computing, data capture and documentation needs in a single device, improving productivity and reducing costs. Its extended range means that companies can apply the benefits of area imaging across their total warehouse operations, existing and future, opening up new application opportunities and efficiencies.

The CK31ex is the first device to integrate the Intermec Intellibeam(TM) EX25 auto-focus near-far scan engine, which delivers an array of benefits. It reads and decodes 1D and 2D bar codes as well as composite and postal codes, from near or far, in any orientation. It can also read bar codes printed on plain paper at long distances, eliminating the need for expensive retro-reflective label media.

Because workers don't need to twist their wrists to align the CK31ex with the barcode, their scanning efficiency is improved. The CK31ex also enables users to capture images suitable for proof-of-delivery and documentation of damaged, expired or unsealed goods. Its unique auto-focus technology ensures accurate, motion tolerant scanning even when lighting conditions are dim or the codes to be read are damaged, obscured, or placed on high shelving.

"The ability of the CK31ex to read from any distance, in any orientation and at any angle dramatically improves our workers' productivity," said Todd King of Kemira, a global group of leading chemical businesses based in Helsinki, Finland. "Working in a fast-paced environment, we don't want to worry about getting a reading-and the quicker the better. For example, we have pallets full of bags wrapped in plastic wrap that are hard to read using most scanners, but with CK31ex we have had very little problem."

The CK31ex mobile computer supports current warehouse management applications that use 1D bar codes and will also support companies as they increasingly incorporate 2D symbologies into their operations, whether to take advantage of 2D's ability to capture more information in a smaller space, or to comply with initiatives from their customers and suppliers in industries such as automotive, aerospace and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

"Organizations are increasingly embracing hierarchical or hybrid data collection solutions that leverage multiple AIDC technologies to support their supply chain operations," said David Krebs, director, Mobile & Wireless for Venture Development Corp., a technology market research and strategy firm. "In our opinion the CK31ex and its versatile scanning and image capture options is uniquely positioned to address these emerging requirements."

The CK31ex mobile computer delivers industrial-class ruggedness and reliable performance in an intuitive device designed for mission-critical warehouse and distribution operations. The handheld computer features a Microsoft Windows CE.NET operating system, optional factory-loaded terminal emulation support, a bright quarter VGA color touch display and a Cisco-compatible 802.11 b/g radio, ensuring the best available wireless network throughput and reliability.

The RoHS-compliant CK31ex has multiple keyboard options to provide flexibility for applications ranging from shipping and receiving, to put-away, picking and cycle counting for the warehouse floor. An optional user-installable and removable pistol grip handle is ideal for highly repetitive scanning. It also supports Intermec's SmartSystems(TM) Foundation, which provides a single, integrated environment for hands-free deployment and management of devices located anywhere in the enterprise-on-site or remote.

The CK31ex begins shipping to global customers this month.
