BOLT SDK Delivers Easy Integration of Web Content for Java Apps on Mobile Devices

Bitstream's award-winning cloud computing architecture now available as a software development kit for building mobile applications with perfect rendering of Web-based content without using an external browser

ORLANDO, Fla. and MARLBOROUGH, Mass., -- International CTIA WIRELESS® 2011 -- Bitstream Inc. (Nasdaq: BITS) today announced availability of the BOLT(TM) SDK, a suite of technology and tools that enables mobile application developers to build feature rich Java (Java ME) applications that work just as well on entry-level feature phones as they do on high-end smartphones. Now any company with Web-based content, such as media companies, can produce mobile apps that are ready to run on billions of mobile phones already in the market.

"Because of our expertise in rendering Web content on mobile devices, Bitstream was approached by developers trying to solve the problem of displaying dynamic Web content within an app without requiring the launch of an external browser, which takes the user outside of the app," said Sampo Kaasila, vice president of research development at Bitstream. "To Bitstream the solution was simple: use the BOLT architecture from within the app. While there may be ways to embed Web content inside smartphone apps, no such capabilities natively exist for Java feature phones, and the BOLT SDK fills that gap."

BOLT, widely regarded as the industry's most feature-rich mobile browser, delivers faster page load times and best in class HTML 5 support enabling access to capabilities typically associated with desktop browsers to any type of mobile phone platform. To achieve both its speed and advanced features, Bitstream engineered a WebKit-based cloud-computing architecture that enables all of the BOLT browser's capabilities.

This cloud-computing architecture is available to developers, enterprises and service providers as the BOLT SDK, which can be used to build Web content into robust applications delivered through their own custom user interfaces. The BOLT SDK supports Web apps written in HTML5, JavaScript and other Web programming languages, and can deliver the same features employed by BOLT including the downloading files, desktop style layout and delivering high performance on resource constrained devices.

The BOLT SDK together with the data compression inherent in the BOLT cloud computing architecture also gives Java ME apps for feature phones an advantage over smartphone apps in both speed of Web content as well as data consumption.

The BOLT SDK can now be used by application developers looking to seamlessly integrate Web content in their applications with the widest possible mobile phone support. The BOLT SDK is completely customizable and depending on the required application capabilities, can be configured in terms of package size and memory usage.

Bitstream will be demonstrating the BOLT cloud computing mobile browser and the BOLT SDK at CTIA WIRELESS in Orlando, Florida, March 22 to 24 in booth 1922. Wireless operators, handset manufacturers and service providers should contact boltsales@bitstream.com to learn more about the BOLT SDK.
