Mitsubishi Plastics Launch X-BARRIER(TM)

- World's highest level of water vapour barrier -

18 December, 2008 - Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc. (MPI), today announces the European launch of its new super high gas barrier sheet based packaging film, X-BARRIER. X-BARRIER achieves the world's highest level of water vapour barrier properties, with a water vapour transmission rate of 10-4 g/m2/day. In addition to the superior water vapour barrier properties, X-BARRIER also has gas barrier properties for oxygen and carbon dioxide.

X-BARRIER's custom made functions provide customers with the ability to tailor heat resistance, high humidity resistance, climate durability and bending durability. MPI has supplied existing manufacturing customers with samples of X-BARRIER and its high performance qualities have already been confirmed. As a result, MPI has now decided to launch X-BARRIER not only in Japan, but throughout the world.

MPI expects X-BARRIER to play a key role in the development of next-generation flat panel displays and solar batteries. With a sales goal of over 40million Euro over the next three years, MPI will target high-level packaging materials for medical devices, pharmaceutical products, easily oxidisable and rustable materials and vacuum heat-insulating building materials, as well as pursuing further advances in gas barrier qualities through improved technologies.

Although the typical target market for existing gas barrier films is in the packaging materials sector, MPI's newly developed flexible products are perfect for use in the information electronics field too. In addition, the implementation of a productive roll-to-roll process (1) results in dramatically reduced costs.

Uses
Information electronics field: Semiconductor chips, device boards, organic EL displays, organic solar batteries, organic semiconductor, electronic papers, etc.

Packaging materials field: Medical devices such as catheters, needles and threads, eyewash and contact lenses. Easily oxidisable and rustable materials such as pure metal, vacuum heat-insulating building materials, air-ship, air-balloon, air-craft and automobiles.
