Mitel Extends IP Interoperability Leadership

Native SIP Support, trunking and interconnection to third-party wireless on Flagship Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform

OTTAWA, ON and SAN JOSE, CA (VON Spring), March 14 -- Mitel®, the trusted provider of IP communications solutions and applications for growing enterprises, has extended its industry leadership in delivering the full value of networked business solutions with native support of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) in the latest release of the Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP).

"Complementing our broad suite of IP communications solutions, the addition of native SIP support on the 3300 ICP enables customers to take full advantage of their investment in a multi-vendor environment," said Ron Wellard, vice president, product development. "We view SIP as the enabler of interoperability and this release allows the 3300 ICP to interconnect with soft-switch vendors that represent more than 90 percent of the soft-switch market as well as offering support for SIP endpoints and applications."

Mitel enables users to fully leverage the power and feature functionality of the 3300 ICP through generic SIP endpoints and innovative use of existing hunt group and HotDesking functionality. Additionally, SIP connectivity to Microsoft® Office Communicator for softphone, presence and collaboration functionality and third-party call control inter-working with Microsoft Live Communications Server is enabled using SIP, CSTA and XML.

Microsoft has adopted SIP for its Live Communications Server product and Windows Messenger(TM), as well as AOL and many others for instant messaging. Mitel's newly introduced Live Business Gateway enables enterprises to implement IP-based solutions through a smooth, intelligent evolution. Working in conjunction with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server, a SIP-based presence and collaboration server, the Mitel / Microsoft partnership delivers advanced applications for global communication and collaboration.

Mitel phones have long supported both SIP and Mitel IP (MiNET) protocols on a single hardware platform.

About SIP

SIP, an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard, is an open, peer- to-peer Internet-genuine protocol for establishing and managing multi-party, mixed-media sessions over converged networks. SIP enables the creation and deployment of feature-rich services that go far beyond simple IP telephony phone calls. It's flexibility and scalability make tasks such as quick conferencing and instant messaging easy and cost effective.
