Phihong's Midspans Reduce Installation Time and Costs for VoIP

FREMONT, Calif. (December 12, 2005) - Phihong, the global leader in low-cost Power-over-Ethernet solutions, has developed midspans for powering VoIP applications. Available in 1-, 8-, 16- and 24-port versions, the midspans are cost-effective and easy-to-implement alternatives to electrical outlets, and provide customers with a single point of backup for all of their VoIP phones.

"With PoE, businesses won't lose their phones when they lose power because a single UPS can be added to maintain power for the switch and phones. The IP phone power is still available via the Ethernet and will still operate," said Keith Hopwood, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Phihong USA. "This feature is critical to industries that cannot operate without access to their communications systems, such as brokerage houses and emergency services."

Phihong's midspans give VoIP systems full power as soon as they are plugged in and turned on, with no complex set-up process required. Offering 15.4W per port, the midspan will full power to all ports so there is no need for calculating which devices to connect, saving customers time and money during installation.

Power-over-Ethernet allows both power and data to be carried over a single Ethernet cable, enabling a device to operate entirely from the power it receives through the data cable. A midspan is used to implement PoE into an existing network where power can be inserted on the spare pair. This eliminates the need for additional wall outlets, so phones can be moved around offices without costly and time-consuming rewiring. The Phihong midspan powers all ports to full power specification limits of IEEE802.3af.

"Phihong is lowering the cost to upgrade networks for PoE," said Hopwood. As the only midspan provider that also manufactures its products, Phihong is able to offer the midspans at a very affordable price, much less expensive than other PoE products on the market, according to Hopwood. Current solutions cost as much as $100 per port (source VDC) to provide PoE source power, yet Phihong has lowered the cost to less than $20 per port.

Phihong midspans were designed for IEEE 802.3af and are also compatible with many pre-af legacy 79 Series IP phones from Cisco Systems. For compatibility, please visit the Phihong Web site. The midspans have been tested by the University of New Hampshire for PoE interoperability. IP Phones tested for compliance include 3COM, Avaya, Nortel and Polycom. A full list of products tested is also available on the Phihong Web site.

The Enterprise midspan provides eight to 24 ports to upgrade an existing architecture with total output power of 370W. The USB port allows for diagnostic testing via laptop so no adapter cables are required. All Phihong midspans are cUL, CE and TUV approved and comply with all FCC and EN EMC requirements.

Pricing for the 24-port midspans starts at $495 for one piece, single port for $29.95 one piece. More information is available on the web site, at www.phihong.com/midspan.
