Microlens Arrays offer custom configurations.

Press Release Summary:

Available in flat and right-angle configurations, injection-molded P1L Microlens Arrays are rated to operate in uncontrolled environments from -40 to +85°C. Flat MLAs are offered in collimator and focusing types, and right-angle units allow designers to bend light at optical interface. Alignment is through precise positioning holes based on MT guide-pin spacing. Insertion loss for free space connection is 0.5 dB when AR coating is applied and air gap is optimized.

Omron's Microlens Arrays Offer Custom Configuration, Precision Coupling Performance at Low Cost

SCHAUMBURG, IL (January 20, 2005)-Omron's development of mass-produced injection-molded Microlens Arrays (MLAs) has made cost-effective parallel lenses the new industry standard for both Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF) and Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) configurations. The new P1L MLAs are rated to operate in uncontrolled environments from -40 to +85 degrees Celsius and are available in both flat and right-angle configurations. These lens arrays feature easy alignment through the use of highly-precise positioning holes based on MT guide-pin spacing. Flat MLAs are available in both collimator and focusing types. The innovative right-angle type allows designers to bend light at an optical interface for increased design flexibility.

Injection-molded production means the MLAs are easily customizable to customer needs, including various channel configurations (1 x 4, 2 x 12, etc.) and physical sizes. Insertion loss for a free space connection using these lenses has been measured as low as 0.5dB when AR coating is applied and air gap is optimized. The standard flat MLAs measure 2.5mm (W) by 6.4mm (L) by 0.55M (H); right angle MLAs measure 2.6mm (W) by 6.4mm (L) by 2.6mm(H). Anti-reflective coating is also available as an option.

The new MLAs are ideal for parallel optical linking in transceivers, for a variety of optical interconnections, and for board-to-board and chip-to-chip interconnection and free-space optical connectivity.

The Omron P1L MLA is currently available from stock at a cost of $20 for the flat type and $30 for the right-angle type in small volumes. Significantly lower pricing is available for high-volume applications.
