STMicroelectronics Moves VISA Level 3 Smart Card Chips to Next-Generation 180nm Production Process

Enhanced price/performance of 180nm technology will benefit cost-sensitive banking applications

Geneva, November 17, 2003 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a world leader in delivering smart card chips and solutions, has announced the first three members of its ST19 family of secure microcontrollers ranked at technology level 3 by Visa International to be manufactured in leading edge 180nm technology.

Aimed at all cost-sensitive smart card banking applications, the ST19WK08, ST19WSC8 and ST19WS02 retain the advantages of ST's popular ST19 family, including high-security features and Common Criteria EAL4+ certification, while providing increased price/performance through the move from today's standard 250nm smart card production technology to the new 180nm technology generation.

All three devices incorporate the ST19 8-bit microcontroller and include on-chip memories (User ROM, User RAM and EEPROM) with state-of-the-art security features. The ROM, RAM and EEPROM memories can be configured into partitions with customized access rules and access from any memory area to another is protected by hardware firewalls. Access rules are user defined and can be selected by mask options. An on-chip ST ROM contains a comprehensive set of ST-provided functions and libraries.

"ST's uncompromising dedication to security combined with our advanced manufacturing technology enables ST to offer our customers financial products with a unique price/performance/security combination," said Andreas Räschmeier, Financial and Identification Division general manager, STMicroelectronics.

Additional security features common to all three devices include clock management, clock frequency and voltage sensors, and an Enhanced DES accelerator for symmetric (secret-key) cryptographic algorithms (including DES, triple DES, DESX, and CBC chaining mode computations) provided in the ST ROM.

The ST19WK08 also includes a 1088-bit Modular Arithmetic Processors plus on-chip library support for asymmetrical (public key) algorithms. Firmware functions include fast modular multiplication, squaring, modular exponentiation (with or without Chinese Remainder Theorem), RSA and DSA signature and verification, and other calculations on operands having software-selectable lengths of up to 2,176-bits.

The ST19 platform offers a wide range of products to suit both low cost and high performance applications and is certified to ISO 15408 Common Criteria at level EAL4+. The ST19WS02 provides 48KB of User ROM, 2KB of high performance EEPROM and 1KB of RAM. The ST19WSC8 provides 64KB of User ROM, 8KB of EEPROM and 2KB of RAM whilst the ST19WK08 has 112KBs of User ROM, 8KB of EEPROM and 4KB of RAM.
