Micrel Makes Major In-Roads with Quadruple Play Ethernet Solution

KSZ8842-PMQLI IC Integrated Into New AMD Reference Design Kit

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 24 / / -- Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in Ethernet, analog, and high bandwidth communications IC solutions, today announced that its KSZ8842-PMQLI Ethernet IC has been integrated into the new AMD Geode(TM) LX EPIC Reference Design Kit (RDK). The KSZ8842-PMQLI is the industry's first 2-port Ethernet switch with 32-bit PCI bus interface in an industrial temperature grade. The Ethernet solution, launched in September 2005, is aimed at embedded and industrial networking applications.

"Micrel's KSZ8842-PMQL has all of the features needed to support next- generation quadruple play (voice, video, data and gaming) applications. In addition, the -PMQLI part in an industrial temperature grade makes it perfect for Industrial and outdoor environments," said Grahame Cooney, product marketing director, Micrel Ethernet group. "We are pleased that AMD incorporated the KSZ8842-PMQLI into their latest RDK, providing integrated switching, improved QoS and I-Temp capabilities. Each part is individually tested to guarantee that it will meet the industrial temperature range, ensuring worldclass reliability."

"AMD continues to look for ways to enhance our embedded offerings and help developers create low-power, high-performance products quickly and efficiently," said Erik Salo, director of marketing for AMD's Embedded Computing Solutions Division. "The addition of an integrated 2-port switch and PCI interface with industrial temperature range support to our latest reference design kit is a great benefit to our customers. By delivering an integrated, industrial-grade solution this device meets our customers' networking needs for high-performance SBC products such as data acquisition, video processing, point of sale terminals, telecommunications, GPS devices and motion control."

The KSZ8842-PMQLI is an advanced, 2-port Ethernet device that can be configured as a fully managed, Layer-2 switch with the third port connected to a host processor. Highly versatile, it can also be configured as a repeater for use in latency-critical industrial Ethernet applications where all packets from one port are broadcast to the remaining two ports. The device is also ideal as a replacement for two single port Ethernet controllers with a single KSZ8842-PMQL IC, where network traffic is 100 percent segregated between the two ports.

The KSZ8842-PMQLI provides HP-Auto-MDIX as standard technology in all Micrel's Ethernet devices. This enables straight or crossover cables to connect to the device, taking the guess work away from the end user. The device also features Micrel's recently launched Link Doctor (LinkMD(TM)), a cable diagnostic package that enables diagnosis of common cabling problems. Rapid diagnosis of cabling conditions, including distance to fault information, results in reduced customer calls (truck rolls or product returns) and IT service requests. The KSZ8842-PMQL (I) is part of a family of embedded products released by Micrel in the second half of 2005. Other than PCI, other host interfaces supported include generic bus (8-, 16-, 32-bit) or MII interfaces, making the single, dual and 3-port switch controllers perfect for connecting to any FPGA or microprocessor.
