Metal-Cored Wires produce moderately soft arc.

Press Release Summary:

McKay® GOLDCOR® 308LSi and 316LSi gas-shielded stainless wires produce concave bead profile and are formulated to operate in spray transfer mode with shielding gas of 98% argon/2% oxygen. In recommended spray transfer mode and welding in flat and horizontal positions, deposition rates range from 8.0-20.22 lb/hr for .045 in. dia wire and 7.5-27.0 lb/hr for 1/16-in. wire while operating at 185-450 A DCEP. Wires are suited for chemical and food service fabrication.

New McKay GOLDCOR® 308LSi and 316LSi Metal-Cored Wires Improve Travel Speed and Deposition Rates

-Provide increased travel speeds and higher deposition rates
-Improve welding productivity through reduced cleanup time
-Specially designed for chemical and food service fabrication

TROY, Ohio, September 16, 2004-To increase travel speeds and provide higher deposition rates in stainless steel applications, Hobart Brothers introduces their McKay® GOLDCOR® 308LSi and 316LSi metal-cored gas-shielded stainless wires. Specifically designed for chemical and food service fabrication that have poor to fair fit up, the 308LSi and 316LSi wires produce a moderately soft arc and are well suited for vertical down (30 to 60 degree incline) robotic welding. The wires produce a concave bead profile and are formulated to operate in the spray transfer mode with a shielding gas of 98 percent argon/2 percent oxygen.

The GOLDCOR 308LSi and 316LSi both fall under AWS (American Welding Specifications) classification A5.9 Specification for Corrosion Resisting Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Steel Bare and Composite Metal-Cored Welding Electrodes and offer all the advantages of a metal-cored wire, including low spatter and reduced slag. The 308LSi is ideal for joining 301, 302, 304, 304L and 308 stainless steels, whereas the 316LSi is designed to join 316 and 316L stainless steel.

Speed and Efficiency
Recognizing the need for better quality and higher productivity in any welding application, Hobart Brothers designed the 308LSi and 316LSi wires to offer increased travel speeds and higher deposition rates. For stainless steel applications that have poor fit up, the wires allow for quick gap bridging with little to no slag and lower spatter, thereby increasing throughput time and lowering cleanup time.

According to Hobart Brothers' product manager Jennifer Monnin, "These McKay wires can provide increased travel speeds as much as 30 percent over stainless solid wires." For that reason, Monnin recommends using the 308LSi and 316LSi wires for robotic welding or for semi-automatic welding applications.

In addition to increased travel speeds, the 308LSi and 316LSi wires provide 25 to 30 percent higher deposition rates than solid wires. In the recommended spray transfer mode and welding in flat and horizontal positions, the deposition rates range from 8.0- to 20.22-lbs./hr. for the .045-in diameter wire and 7.5- to 27.0-lbs./hr. for the 1/16-in. wire while operating at 185 to 450 amps DCEP (22 to 34V). This feature makes the 308LSi and 316LSi wires appealing not only in terms of reduced cleanup and better weld quality, but also in terms of overall production costs.

Monnin says, "Look at the factors. When you consider your whole job, the main cost of doing the welding is the labor, the clean up and the gas. When you can use a filler metal that reduces the labor time through faster travel plus decreases clean up time, your overall welding cost is going to be lower."
