Merging System suits high-volume sortation operations.

Press Release Summary:

The vhsWEDGE(TM) multi-lane merging system operates at speeds up to 600 fpm, resulting in throughput rates of more than 200 cartons per minute. System integrates accumulation conveyors, gapping conveyors, staging belts, high-speed spur conveyors, and controls. After delivery from
accumulator, gapping conveyors measure carton dimensions and calculate appropriately sized gap using optic photo-eye controls.

FKI Logistex Automation Division vhsWEDGE(TM) Provides Efficient Merge, Gap Solution for High-Volume Sortation Operations

Integrated conveying, servo motor, and controls technology balances product flow for multiple-lane systems

(Cincinnati, OH: August 27, 2002) FKI Logistex (LSE:FKI.L) Automation Division, a market-leader in the design, manufacture, installation, and integration of innovative material handling solutions announces the vhsWEDGE(TM), an advanced high-speed,
multi-lane merging system for high-volume sortation operations. The vhsWEDGE operates at speeds of up to 600 feet per minute (fpm), resulting in throughput rates of more than 200 cartons per minute (cpm), and is used to effectively and efficiently feed high-speed sliding shoe sorters.

Integrated Technology Ensures Balanced Product Flow
The unique integration of accumulation conveyors, gapping conveyors, staging belts, high-speed spur conveyors, and sophisticated controls technology into a single system makes the vhsWEDGE ideal for multi-lane merging. After delivery from the
accumulator, gapping conveyors measure carton dimensions and calculate an appropriately sized gap using state-of-the-art optic photo-eye controls.

As cartons transfer to the servo-staging belt, the belt's speed and duration are adjusted to provide optimal product gapping. Each incoming carton is carefully positioned until a fully staged, minimally gapped lane of product is constructed. The
main system controller monitors the status of all lanes and releases them in the most efficient manner, resulting in pre-gapped, closely spaced trains of product. This superior control method balances product flow and increases overall system
throughput rates.

The vhsWEDGE is designed for multi-lane applications, where flexibility in lane placement is required. The vhsWEDGE is particularly well suited for applications where numerous product lanes need to be merged into a central take-away conveyor. Lanes can be spurred into the main take-away line from either side,
resulting in a configurable system that can replace existing slower speed merging systems with minimal layout changes. This flexibility in lane layout configuration makes the vhsWEDGE a more versatile and cost-effective choice than traditional
table-type merge equipment.

"The vhsWEDGE provides a versatile, dependable alternative to typically higher priced table-type merge systems," said John Pelka, vice president of marketing for FKI Logistex Automation Division. "For multi-lane operations that need superior configurability at a cost-effective price, the vhsWEDGE is truly one of the best products on the market."

The vhsWEGDE is designed to integrate fully with the extensive line of FKI Logistex conveyor and sortation equipment, including the Accuglide Plus(TM) conveyor and UniSort(TM) line of products.
