Media Converters target Gigabit networks.

Press Release Summary:

Offered in stand-alone or Point System chassis card form factors, GETF-110 Series integrates fiber optic cabling into 1,000 Mbps UTP environments. Copper-to-fiber converters offer Transparent Link Pass Through and Remote Fault Detect, preventing them from isolating head-end device from link failures at remote-end by monitoring status of copper and fiber links. Fiber Loopback enables devices to loop back signal from RX port to TX port over fiber for testing and troubleshooting during installation.

Transition Networks Unveils Enhanced Gigabit Media Converter

Product is the Most Feature-rich Media Converter Available for Gigabit Networks

NEW YORK, Sept. 19 / -- The conversion technology and switching expert, Transition Networks Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems Inc., today announced the introduction of its new, Gigabit Ethernet copper-to-fiber media converter. This converter provides a cost-effective method for integrating fiber optic cabling into 1000Mbps UTP environments. In addition, its enhanced features provide more network management information to network administrators than had previously been available.

"Network managers value devices that can provide high levels of network management information," says Bill Schultz, vice president of marketing at Transition Networks. "This newest media converter provides customers with a cost-effective method for upgrading their networks. As always, Transition is committed to delivering feature-rich products, such as the new Gigabit converters, to assist in quickly identifying and troubleshooting network link failures."

New Product Features
The new GETF-110 series of Gigabit Ethernet copper-to-fiber media converters replaces Transition's GETF-105 media converters. With the new product line, customers benefit from new features like Transparent Link Pass Through and Remote Fault Detect. These features prevent the media converters from isolating a head-end device from link failures at the remote-end by monitoring the status of both the copper and fiber links. Should any link go down, the converters will pass the link status information on to both end devices, notifying them of the link failure.

Fiber Loopback is another new feature found in this Gigabit converter. Fiber Loopback puts the converter into a special mode that enables the device to loop back the signal from the RX port to the TX port over the fiber for testing and troubleshooting purposes during the installation of the converter.

Also new to this enhanced Gigabit converter is the support for SFP optics. Users can choose between converters with fixed fiber interfaces and converters with an open SFP slot. Converters with an open SFP slot offer the flexibility to support multimode, single-mode or even long haul single-mode fiber transmissions based upon the individual SFP module used in the converter.

Product Configuration
The Gigabit converters are available in either stand-alone or Point System chassis card form factors. The advanced features are controllable via a 6-position dip switch accessible on the side of the converter. These same features can be monitored and configured on chassis based converters through Transition's Focal Point software. Focal Point is an SNMP based management application.
